JAZZ IN LITTLE BELGIUM, by Robert PERNET
In French. This unique and incredibly documented book, full of biographical data and rare illustrations, is a must for jazz lovers interested in the history of jazz in Belgium. Unfortunately, it is now about 20 years old and out of print, and unfortunately Robert PERNET, who died on Feb. 27, 2001, could not complete the update, except of the discographic part (see below).
En français. Cet ouvrage unique et incroyablement documenté, rempli de données biographiques et d'illustrations rares, est un must pour les amateurs de jazz intéressés par l'histoire du jazz en Belgique. Il a maintenant une vingtaine d'années et est épuisé, et malheureusement, Robert PERNET, décédé le 27/2/2001, n'a pu en terminer la mise à jour, sauf la partie discographie (énorme, voir plus bas).
JAZZ IN LITTLE BELGIUM : NEW EDITION OF THE DISCOGRAPHIC VOLUME
BELGIAN JAZZ DISCOGRAPHY by ROBERT PERNET
In 1967 was published Robert PERNET's (deceased in 2001) JAZZ IN LITTLE BELGIUM, a unique history & discography of Belgian Jazz.
After more than 30 years it is easy to imagine how many recordings by or including Belgian musicians have been made worldwide. It was about time to update this work. Many records have also been reissued either on LP
or CD. New sessions have been discovered and many details about obscure recordings have come to the light.
Extensive researches were made on such subjects as Belgian Ragtime on records, Piano Rolls, various "Dance Bands" that recorded in the Jazz idiom, better known as "Hot Dance", several non-Jazz ensembles devoting a part of their repertoire to that music and various recordings of all styles up to the Free Jazz and other
"improvised music" have been included as well.
A new version of this discography was published in November 1999 : BELGIAN JAZZ DISCOGRAPHY.
It contains almost twice and a half as much as in the original edition.
In fact it covers 100 years of recorded Belgian "syncopated music" (1897-1997) with a supplement at end of the book with the recent recordings made in 1998 and 1999.
The notes accompanying the discography are in English.

- Size is regular Din4A (29.5 x 21cm) (about 5 cm thick)
- Hard cover.
- Many pages including color illustrations (78's labels), plus various caricatures and reproductions of signatures of musicians among the pages of the discography.
- Index of all the names appearing in the discography. (approximately 9.500 entries)

En français. Un dictionnaire de référence pour les passionnés de l'histoire du jazz en Belgique. In French. This book, full of biographical data, focuses on the history of the Liège jazz scene. Extended introductions to legendary figures like René THOMAS, Bobby JASPAR, Jacques PELZER, etc + many more.
May be hard to find. The "Maison du Jazz" (Liège Jazz Museum) may still have a few copies (E-mail : jazz@skynet.be).
En français. Cet ouvrage, riche en données biographiques, est centré sur l'histoire du jazz à Liège. Présentation des personnalités légendaires de la "Cité ardente", comme René THOMAS, Bobby JASPAR, Jacques PELZER, et beaucoup d'autres.

Black and white photos of international and Belgian jazzmen by photographer Christian DEBLANC. Freelance jazz journalist Bernard LEGROS wrote a few lines on each featured musician, but also a well documented introductory text on the various currents of contemporary jazz.

Album de photos (noir et blanc) de jazzmen du monde entier (y compris belges), prises par le photographe belge Christian DEBLANC. In French. This book gives an insight on the professions available in the music world of Belgium. Although not specifically jazz oriented, the book includes several interesting pages about jazz, with interviews of musicians like Charles LOOS, Nathalie LORIERS, Philippe AERTS, articles on jazz in Wallonia and Brussels, on jazz writing (by Michel HERR) and on "LES LUNDIS D'HORTENSE", the Belgian Association of Jazz Musicians.
En français. Cet ouvrage fait l'inventaire des professions offertes dans le monde de la musique en Belgique.
