Leader and composer of B. CONNECTION, he also has his own sextet in Belgium where he appears with his fellow Belgians (Pirly ZURSTRASSEN, Philip CATHERINE, Stéphane GALLAND...).
At the same time, he performs with other groups in the U.S.A., France, Switzerland, Germany, The netherlands...
Following public encouragements by Toots THIELEMANS, during a festival, in May '97 he settles in New York where he finds back a number of musicians whom he knew from Berklee, as well as the previous generation whom, to the present, he didn't have contact with and didn't know their music (Mark TURNER, Kurt ROSENWINKEL, Seamus BLAKE...).
Following some public appearances (Birdland, Knitting Factory, ...) which puts him in contact with these musicians, with whom he is impressed, he decided to create his own group B. CONNECTION, New-York version.
2000 sees the release of his album "Flor de Luna (Fresh Sounds/New Talents).
In the winter of 2002, Stéphane MERCIER returns to Europe, where he plays a.o. in Belgium, France, etc..., participating in various jazz projects as a leader (a.o. a quartet with guitarist Maxime BLÉSIN). He also works in France for theater productions.
His album "Safe and Sound in Long Island City (Crea-Son OR 002) was recorded in the US shortly before his return to Europe.
