Vibraphone, marimba


Bart QUARTIER was born on June 2nd, 1961 in Brussels. He has become a vibraphone and marimba player who is at ease as well in classical music as in modern jazz.

After his classical percussion studies Bart studied marimba with Robert Van Sice.
He attended master classes with Keiko Abe, Gordon Stout, William Moersch, Michael Rosen…
He studied jazz with Belgian guitar player Peter Hertmans and composition with piano player Diederik Wissels. He attended clinics by John Abercrombie, Peter Erskine, Mike Mainieri, Bob Malach, Kenny Werner


He realised the first Belgium recording of the Bela Bartok sonata for two piano's and two percussion with Jan Michiels, laureate of the famous 'Koningin Elisabeth wedstrijd'.
Bart was invited by over more then 40 orchestras, ensembles. His playing experience includes opera, symphonic, chamber music, ancient, contempory, jazz, variété, percussion ensembles, radio and TV…

Besides his performing schedule he teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. His students are laureates of international competitions.
As a clinician he was invited in conservatories of Amsterdam, Paris, Seoul, and Tokyo…

  • 'Image' 20 Children's Songs for Marimba (Meredith 1992- Hal Leonard 2000)
  • 'Profils' 24 essays pour vibraphone et piano (Lemoine Paris 2000) are distributed all over the world.
  • His third book 'Encore' 5 bis for mallets is distributed by Claude Giot who is the artistic director of the greatest percussion forum of Europe where Bart is invited for the fifth time.

    Great artists like Robert Van Sice, Gordon Stout and Daniel Goyone introduce all his books.

    Bart is accepted in the Committee of Honour of the World Vibe International Competition with Pierre Boulez as president.


    Bart started his own quartet with bandoneon player Gwenaël Micault, or saxophone player Bart Defoort and a Belgian rhythm section Jean-Louis Rassinfosse (double bass) and Jan De Haas (drums).

    Bart was laureate of the Sabam Contest for Composition for Jazz-themes 2000 and again in 2002.

    As sideman he recorded over 50 CD's and toured in Europe, USA, Korea and Japan.
