DJANGO D'OR

(the "Trophées belges du jazz")

The DJANGO D'OR (named after the late Django REINHARDT) awards, were created in France by Frank HAGÈGE, and originally given to French, European and World jazz artists and records.
After a few years and a close collaboration and active support of BAP/PAB (Belgian Artistic Promotion) of SABAM (Belgian Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers), it was decided to create national awards for Belgian jazz musicians (1 French speaking, 1 Flemish), the "Trophées belges du jazz".
Some Belgian musicians, such as
Toots THIELEMANS and Philip CATHERINE, have also appeared in the European or International category in the French poll.
As of 2000, only one Belgian Django d'Or is awarded, alternating French speaking and Flemish musicians every other year. Besides the Django d'Or, a special Prize of BAP/PAB is given to a Belgian jazz personnality (musician or non-musician) for his career achievements and/or an important contribution to the Belgian jazz scene.
From 2000, more national Django d'Or prizes havec been awarded in other European countries, too.
As of 2000, and every other year, the European Jazz Foundation expands the concept to the global European scene and organizes the EURODJANGO awards.

JAZZ REFERENDUM

Two new jazz referendums in Belgium : the listeners referendum, created by Philippe BARON (of RTBF radio) and Sim SIMONS (VRT radio) and the critics referendum (French speaking jazz critics).
For 98, VRT and RTBF organized their poll together.
In 99, each of them organized its own poll separately...
As far as Belgian jazz musicians are concerned, here is an overview of the "winners". Some of them even appear in the category "Europe".
N.B.: In parentheses behind the winner's name is the category in which his name appears : B (for Belgium), Europe, World

The Prize (now 60.000 BEF), created in 1992 with the support of the PAB/BAP (Belgian Artistic Promotion) of SABAM (Belgian Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers), goes each year to the best Belgian band that plays original compositions during Jazz à Liège Festival.
