Batterie / Drums

Né en Bretagne en 1964, Renaud Person a découvert le jazz en écoutant des disques de Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Count Basie, le MJQ, "Papa" Jo Jones etc... Il a commencé à jouer de la batterie en autodidacte à l'âge de 12 ans.

Parallèlement à la batterie jazz, il a étudié la musicologie et la percussion classique. A la suite d'un stage d'été en Belgique (Lundis d'Hortense), il décide finalement de se consacrer au jazz et aux musiques improvisées. Il a étudié avec Bruno Castellucci, Richard Rousselet, Michel Hatzigeorgiou, Jean-Louis Rassinfosse (Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles). Il a également suivi des cours de piano (Nathalie Loriers, Ron Van Rossum), de composition et d'arrangement (Kris Defoort), et quelques ateliers en France (Jack DeJohnette, Paul Motian, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland, Enrico Pieranunzi).

Actif sur la scène du jazz Belge depuis 1993, il a travaillé avec de nombreux artistes, dont notamment Paolo Radoni, Steve Houben, Peter Hertmans, Salvatore La Rocca, Fabrice Alleman, Richard Rousselet, Diederik Wissels, Kris Defoort, Ron Van Rossum, Michel Herr, Frank Vaganée, Fabian Fiorini, Otti Van Der Werf, Gino Lattuca, Antoine Prawerman, Bo Van Der Werf, Maxime Blésin, Paolo Loveri, Erik Vermeulen, Laurent Blondiau, Nicolas Kummert

Il a été membre de nombreux groupes, dont "Jazzpirine" (Phil Abraham/Richard Rousselet quartet), "Un Poco Loco" (Pierre Vaiana Group), "Aquarelle" (Stephan Bracaval-Ernst Vranckx quartet), Pierre Lognay quintet, le groupe "Alchimie" etc.

Parmi les batteurs qui l'inspirent ou l'ont inspiré, Renaud Person cite volontiers Jack de Johnette, Elvin Jones, Bill Stewart, ou Jeff "Tain" Watts...

Mêlant ses multiples influences à sa recherche personnelle, il développe aujourd'hui une approche trs "jazz", tout à la fois subtile, créative, énergique et stimulante, mais restant fondamentalement attachée à la célèbre formule de Duke Ellington : "It doesn't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing".

Fin 2003, il forme son propre quintette RENAUD 5.


Born June 22 '64, of Britton origin, Renaud PERSON discovered jazz while listening to albums of Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Count Basie, the MJQ, "Papa" Jo JonesHe started playing the drums at the age of 12, self-taught.

Besides jazz drumming, he studied musicology and classical percussion in Aix-en-Provence.

After his studies, he arrived in Belgium and after having attended a workshop of Lundis d'Hortense, in '92, he decided to devote himself entirely to jazz and improvised music.

In '95 he obtained a 1st prize at the Brussels Music conservatory where he studied with Bruno CASTELLUCCI, Richard ROUSSELET, Michel HATZIGEORGIOU, Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE,
He also took piano with Nathalie LORIERS and Ron VAN VAN ROSSUM, composition and arranging with Kris DEFOORT Later on, he attended various workshops, in France with Jack DE JOHNETTE, Paul MOTIAN, Joe LOVANO, Dave HOLLAND, Enrico PIERANUNZI...,

SInce 1913, he worked on the Belgian scene with many well-known jazz musicians, a.o. Paolo RADONI, Steve HOUBEN, Peter HERTMANS, Paolo LOVERI, Erik VERMEULEN, Otti VAN DER WERF, Phil ABRAHAM, Fabrice ALLEMAN, Richard ROUSSELET, Charles LOOS, Michel HERR, Frank VAGANÉE, Maxime BLESIN, Laurent BLONDIAU, Gino LATTUCA and Pierre VAIANA.

Renaud PERSON played with numerous bands, a.o. "Jazzpirine" (Phil Abraham/Richard Rousselet quartet), "Un Poco Loco" (Pierre Vaiana Group), "Aquarelle" (Stephan Bracaval-Ernst Vranckx quartet), Pierre Lognay quintet, ALCHIMIE with a.o. saxophonist Nicolas KUMMERT and guitarist Philippe REUL and appears on the cd Alchimie (Igloo Igl 153).

At the end of 2003, he formed his own quintet, RENAUD 5.


Renaud teaches at the European school in Brussels and at the Mouvement school.
His specialities are jazz music (drums, piano, theory, history) and classical percussion.
