1. Kurt VAN HERCK / Kris GOESSENS QUARTET

It is since few years now that saxophonist Kurt VAN HERCK and pianist Kris GOESSENS appear in duo at various places such as the Floor (Rotterdam), the Hopper (Antwerp) and many Belgian and Dutch festivals. On the occasion of the "Brakke Grond Festival", they decided to formthis quartet... The group proposes compositions of each of its members and is attachedto the tradition of contemporary jazz, with the support of arrangements of knownstandards. The formation seeks to create a musical liberty, where the creativity of each individual is highlighted alternatively.
In '97, the group appeared a.o at the Jazz Middelheim Festival (Antwerp).

2. Kurt VAN HERCK Trio

A new band that presents compositions of Kurt VAN HERCK and the guitarist Karl VAN DEUN. Appearance at the '97 J@zz@round festival in Brussels.

Une formule trio sans la section rythmique habituelle (basse et batterie) : guitare acoustique, sax et percussions. Le volume du groupe se situe donc la plupart du temps plus bas que la moyenne. Ceci permet au trio de jouer davantage autour de la transparence, des nuances, etc.L'ensemble n'a pas de leader véritable, bien que Kurt soit surtout l'âme du groupe et le celui qui prenne les initiatives. Karl a écrit et continue d'écrire la plus grande partie d'un répertoire aux styles très éclectiques. Ses influences vont de la musique populaire, à la musique ethnique, en passant par le blues, le jazz, la pop, Bill FRISELL, Charles IVES, etc... A c™té de l'interprétation de morceaux composés, le trio s'adonne aussi à l'improvisation libre.

Een trioformule zonder de klassieke ritmesectie (bas en drums) : akoestische gitaar, saxofoon en percussie, qua volume zit je dan meestal " lager dan het gemiddelde ". Dit maakt dat deze formule kansen biedt om te spelen, werken rond transparantie, doorzichtigheid, nuances, enz.Het is een ensemble zonder echte leider, al is Kurt toch vooral de bezieler en initiatiefnemer van het gezelschap. Karl schreef en schrijft het merendeel van het repertoire dat heel uiteenlopend is qua stijlen. Invloeden zijn o.a. volksmuziek, etnische muziek, blues, jazz, popmuziek, Bill FRISELL, Charles IVES, enz. Naast de gekomponeerde stukken (meestal met, soms zonder, improvisatie) speelt het trio ook vrije improvisaties.
