"TAKE THE DUCK" is an international Jazz Quartet founded in 1998 by Toine Thys
((Belgium) on alto and soprano sax and Daniel NOESIG (Austria, winner
Soloist price Dutch Jazz Competition 2000) on trumpet. The two members of
the rhythm section of "TAKE THE DUCK" are Sal LA ROCCA (Belgium) on acoustic
bass and Thorsten GRAU (Germany) on drums.
TAKE THE DUCKı is many things: an international jazz group, a mysterious
name (best small groupıs name of year 2002), a quartet without
chord-instrument, thousands of kilometers on the road, a three-voices
harmony quiz, or a pacific austrian-belgian-german enterprise, perhaps a
great concentration of price-winner musicians... But more than that, it is a
real BAND (sometimes hard to find these days), with an impressive and
specific sound.
A concert of ³TAKE THE DUCK² is always an adventure full of surprises,
grooves and colors, swing and good energy. They seem able to establish a
communication with a big crowd, as well as with a small audience of jazz
experts. The horns blend and paraphrase almost telepathically together
(Toine Thys on saxes, and daniel Nösig on trumpet), and leave to the
creative rhythm section a lot of space for grooves or ideas (Thorsten Grau
on drums, and Sal Larocca on Bass). A very flexible approach and the risks
involved in this music make every concert a different experience.
Since 2003, they feature regulary guests like Ben Monder or Maarten van der
Grinten (guitar) in concert, to explore new possibilities .
After a first and successful CD ("RESOLUTION", Ducktones prod., 2002), their
new product ³DUCKıS FOOD² features Maarten van der Grinten (G) and Martin
Reiter (Rhodes). It is produced by the label C.M.S. (A) and is distributed
in Austria, Germany, Switserland, Benelux and Italy.
The playing of this CD has been described has achieving ³a level of
spontaneity and empathy that is captivating for the listener². ³These guys
never burden the music with their chops. Their sounds as instrumentalists,
are warm and dynamic, and the ideas never seem forced or hurried². ³Take the
Duck takes you on a ride across a fascinating and vivid landscape. It's
almost as if each tune were a different town on a train trip². (Chris
Cheek).
They perform regulary in Belgium, Holland, Austria, Spain and Germany.
