1. BEN SLUIJS QUARTET Ben SLUIJS, alto sax, flute, composer Erik VERMEULEN, piano Piet VERBIST, acoustic bass Eric THIELEMANS, drums |
These 4 young musicians have a lot of individual experience in playing jazz
live.
They've been playing together before in different formations, and now found
each other in this quartet, which plays regulary since 1995.
This band plays
original music composed by Ben SLUIJS. Their jazz style can be described as a
combination of modal jazz (COLTRANE, Joe HENDERSON, McCoy TYNER...) and
modern Jazz (MONK, MILES...)
Ben's compositions have now and then some classical music influences
slightly comparable with the compositions of Keith JARRETT, Lee KONITZ, Bill
EVANS... and some more free influences (Ornette COLEMAN, MONK...) with here
and there some sheets of blues.
This band achieves a very tight and personal group sound with a lot of
interaction between the players.
In 1997 they released their first cd : "Food For Free" (On Purpose records 001).
In March 2000 they released their second cd : "Candy Century" (Werf 019).
In April 2001, they released "Seasounds" (Werf 024).
In July 2002, they released "Flying Circles" (Werf 034).
