Depuis quelques années, le Centre des Musiques Arabes et Méditerranéennes (CMAM) de Tunisie souhaitait élaborer un projet musical rapprochant les cultures tunisienne et européenne. Le CMAM est partenaire de la Sowarex (société belge d'édition phonographique) à travers l'accord cadre qui lie le Ministère tunisien de la Culture et la Communauté française de Belgique. Naturellement, la Sowarex, avec le CGRI (Commissariat Général aux Relations Internationales de la Communauté française de Belgique) a accueilli favorablement ce projet. Parallèlement, les organisateurs du Festival Vidéo Liège décidaient d’accueillir la Tunisie comme hôte d’honneur de la prochaine édition (mars 2000) de cette manifestation qui ambitionne de s'ouvrir sur différents styles d'expression artistique dont la musique. Alain Pierre, guitariste liégeois qui s'était déjà produit en Tunisie, marquait son intérêt pour devenir le partenaire belge. Côté tunisien, le choix s'est porté sur le guitariste tunisien Fawzi Chekili, musicien qui, avec Anouar Brahem, incarne de nos jours le renouveau de la musique instrumentale tunisienne. Enfin, le projet d'une création commune de jazz belgo-tunisien fut retenu et inscrit. Alain Pierre, lors d'un concert en Tunisie en juin 99, rencontra Fawzi Chekili. Rencontre au cours de laquelle les deux artistes se découvrent mutuellement à travers leurs compositions et leur approche respective. Le courant passe très bien. Très vite, les musiciens se sont rendus compte de la réalité de l’apport mutuel : Alain Pierre étant captivé par les caractéristiques mélodiques et rythmiques propres à la musique tunisienne et exprimées par Fawzi Chekili, ce dernier, quant à lui, étant sensible à l’approche du travail de l’harmonie musicale par Alain Pierre. Encore fallait-il étoffer le projet. En effet, il est vite apparu aux yeux et aux oreilles de tous que la formule du quartet était idéale : ni trop lourde, ni trop légère. Outre ces deux musiciens aux guitares acoustiques, le choix s’est porté naturellement, côté belge, vers Steve Houben, déjà connu pour son éclectisme musical et avec lequel chacun des deux musiciens avait déjà joué, et, côté tunisien, sur Hichem Badrani (Ney, flûte en roseau), connu de Steve Houben et avec lequel Fawzi Chekili joue régulièrement. Le projet "Anfass" était né. En Arabe, "Anfass" veut dire "Souffles". Aborder par la création musicale les particularités inhérentes à chacune des deux expressions musicales était l'objectif évident pour les deux musiciens. Ce but essentiel sera traduit par des compositions originales d'Alain Pierre et de Fawzi Chekili mettant en exergue les particularités de chaque musicien. Qu'elles soient communes ou individuelles, les compositions d’Alain et de Fawzi intègrent les particularités rythmiques et mélodiques de la musique tunisienne et les particularités de l’harmonie européenne pour aboutir à une création musicale unique en son genre et en son interprétation. C'est aussi la première rencontre mondiale entre une flûte traversière et un ney. Ce projet est une création originale accessible au grand public et susceptible de sensibiliser les personnes curieuses de découvrir des nouveaux modes d’expression. Une attention toute particulière a guidé les musiciens dans l’élaboration de ce projet: l'importance de l’aspect humain dans la création et le respect des identités de chacun dans l’écriture, l’interprétation et le développement de ce projet musical ; le but ultime étant de réussir un savant mélange et dosage de réalités culturelles personnelles, plutôt que de réaliser un brassage grossier, superficiel et donc, nécessairement réducteur. "Anfass" a donné les 4 premiers concerts en TUNISIE du 24 au 27 NOVEMBRE 1999 au Centre des Musiques Arabes et Méditerranéennes (CMAM) à Sidi Bou Saïd (Tunis). Ils ont reçu un accueil plus que favorable de la part de la presse, du public nombreux chaque soir ainsi que de personnalités musicales (citons, entre autres, Anouar Brahem et Dhafer Youssef). Un premier CD est paru en août 2000 : ANFASS (Igloo igl 148). | For a couple of years, the Arabian and Mediterranean Music Centre of Tunisia, wanted to elaborate a musical project bringing Tunisian and European cultures closer together. The Arabian and Mediterranean Music Centre is the partner of Sowarex (a Belgian phonographic production company) which throughout the framework agreement binds the Tunisian Ministry of Culture and the French-speaking community of Belgium. Of course, Sowarex, and the General Commissariat for International Relations of the French-speaking community of Belgium have favourably accepted this project. At the same time, the organisers of the Video Festival of Liège decided to welcome Tunisia as the guest of honour at the next edition of the festival (March 2000). This festival has the ambition to open itself up to different styles of artistic expression of which music. Alain Pierre, a guitarist from Liège, who has already been produced in Tunisia, showed interest to become this Belgian partner. On the Tunisian side the guitarist Fawzi Chekili from Tunisia was chosen. This musician, together with Anouar Brahem, embodies today the renewal of Tunisian instrumental music. Finally, the project of the common creation of Belgian-Tunisian jazz has been held back and registered. Alain Pierre, while performing in Tunisia in June 1999, met Fawzi Chekili. A meeting during which the two artists have discovered each other mutually throughout their compositions and their respective approaches. They get along very well. Very rapidly the musicians realised the reality of their mutual contribution: Alain Pierre being captivated by the melodic and rhythmic characteristics of the Tunisian music expressed by Fawzki Chekili. He, on the other hand, was sensible to the work approach of the musical harmony of Alain Pierre. But the project needed to be enriched. Of course, everyone had quickly seen that the formula of the quartet was ideal: not too heavy, not too light. Besides these two musicians who play acoustical guitar, Steve Houben was chosen to represent the Belgian side. He is already known for his eclectic music and had also played with both of the two musicians before. On the Tunisian side Hichem Badrani was chosen (Ney, reed flute) known by Steve Houben and with whom Fawzi Chekili regularly plays. The Anfass project was born. In Arabic Anfass means breaths. To take up through a musical creation the inherent particularities in each of the two musical expressions was the obvious objective of the two musicians. This essential goal will be translated in two original compositions made by Alain Pierre and Fawzi Chekili, underlining the particularities of each musician. That they be common or individual, the compositions of Alain and Fawzi integrate the rhythmic and melodic particularities of Tunisian music and the particularities of the European harmony to end in a unique musical creation. Unique of its kind and of its interpretation. It is also the first world meeting between the ney and the flute. This project is an original creation, accessible to a large audience and susceptible of making people sensible. People, who are curious to discover new means of expression. A very particular interest has guided these musicians in an elaboration of this project: the importance of the human aspect in the creation and the respect of identities of each in their writings, the interpretation and development of this musical project, the ultimate goal being a skilful mix and proportioning of personal cultural realities, more than to realise a rude, superficial and thus necessarily reducing brazing. Anfass gave its first four concerts in TUNISIA from the 24th till the 27th of November 1999 at the Arabian and Mediterranean Music Centre in Sidi Bou Saïd (Tunis). They received a more than favourable welcoming from the press, from the nightly increasing audience and also from the musicians (Anouar Brahem, Dhafer Youssef, just to name a few).
