| NEW CD OF VIBRAPHONIST/SONGWRITER GUY CABAY : "ON THE JAZZ SIDE OF MY STREET" Guy CABAY, the singer songwriter, pianist, vibraphone player and composer, has a new album out on Igloo (mostly instrumental) entitled On the jazz side of my street (Igloo IGL 181). The nucleus includes Jacques PIROTTON (gt), Benoît VANDERSTRAETEN (el. b) and Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs). But there also are some guests appearances of Steve HOUBEN (sax, fl), Phil ABRAHAM (tb), Alexandre CAVALIERE (vl) and Michel HERR (p). | THE JACK VAN POLL TRIO ON A DVD OF US SINGER DEE DANIELS We read on the Challenge records web site (NL) that they have recorded a DVD of US singer Dee DANIELS backed up by the trio of Dutch pianist Jack VAN POLL (who lives in Belgium), with Hein VAN DE GEYN (b) and Hans VAN OOSTERHOUT (drs). Dee DANIELS lived in Europe during the eighties and often sang in Holland and in Belgium, a.o. with Jack VAN POLL, or with Bruno CASTELLUCCI, Michel HERR, etc... (May 8, 2005) |

| BASSIST JEAN-LOUIS RASSINFOSSE ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THE "LUNDIS d'HORTENSE" A few days ago, the "Lundis d'Hortense", the Belgian association of jazz musicians, elected its new board during its recent General Assembly. The board itself chose bassist Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE to be its chairman for 2 years, a position that Jean-Louis had actually efficiently occupied in the past. | FINAL BAR : DANISH BASS PLAYER NIELS HENNING ORSTED PEDERSEN We've just heard today via Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE and Philip CATHERINE that the Danish bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen has just died from a heart attack at the age of 68. He will be remembered as a brillant virtusoso, a composer and an accomplished musician who played and recorded with thousands of jazz greats, from Oscar PETERSON, Bud POWELL and Joe PASS to Stéphane GRAPELLI, Count BASIE, Dexter GORDON, Archie SHEPP, Anthony BRAXTON or Palle MIKKELBORG. He played a.o. with Philip CATHERINE, in duo recently, and recorded with Philip some albums for Steeplechase : Niels' own albums, albums in trio with Billy HART, with Sam JONES (2 basses), with Dexter GORDON etc...He also played and recorded with Toots THIELEMANS, a.o. with Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs). | FINAL BAR : COMPOSER / EX-PRODUCER ELIAS GISTELINCK (BRT JAZZORKEST, JAZZ MIDDELHEIM) We've just heard that Elias GISTELINCK died yesterday. Elias GISTELINCK (born 1935) has left an important mark on the Belgian jazz history. Although he was a composer of serious music, his openness and his love for jazz led him to be during many years the producer (and defender) of the BRT (radio) Jazzorkest led by Etienne VERSCHUEREN, and to found some 20 years ago the now famous Jazz Middelheim Festival. Even his composing work occasionally referred to jazz : Ndessé ou Blues (1969), Small cantate for Jeanne Lee (1968), Per Che (1967), Music for Miles (1996), etc... Our thoughts go to his family, who counts some familiar faces on the music scene, namely his two sons, singer David LINX and arranger/producer Peter GISTELINCK. (Mar. 26, 2005) |

| FEB. 12, 2005 : AKA MOON TO PARTICIPATE IN A TRIBUTE TO FRIEDRICH GULDA The trio AKA MOON (Fabrizio CASSOL, Michel HATZIGEORGIOU, Stéphane GALLAND) will participate on Feb. 12, 2005 (20:00) in a concert for Child Focus at the Brussels Cirque Royal to pay a tribute to the late Austrian pianist and composer Friedrich GULDA. GULDA made several incursions into jazz and wrote music for several ensembles; he even recorded some LPs of his big band music and duets with Chick COREA. Aka Moon will appear next to a mostly classical program (with a.o. pianist Martha ARGERICH etc..), playing Gulda's concerto for cello and wind instruments and a special trio appearance in a tribute to the Austrian musician. | FINAL BAR : DRUMMER GARCIA MORALES We have just been informed of the death of drummer Garcia MORALES, after a long illness, on Jan. 1st, 2005 at 5 a.m. . The sun of trumpet player Janot MORALES, Garcia was an all around drummer, at ease in jazz, fusion, funk (JJ Band) and pop music. He played and recorded a.o. with Marc MOULIN (Placebo), Philip CATHERINE, John THOMAS (gt), etc...He did part of his career on the German scene, accompanying pianist Eugen CICERO and several pop singers. More recently, he was the drums teacher at the Brussels Conservatory (jazz dept, Flemish section) and played a.o. with Alex SCORIER and his Brussels Little Big Band. (Jan. 3, 2005) |
