DRÉ PALLEMAERTS ON A NEW CD OF BAPTISTE TROTIGNON & DAVID EL-MALEK The French "Naive" label releases a new album co-led by pianist Baptiste TROTIGNON and saxophonist David EL-MALEK. Darryl HALL plays the bass and the drummer is Dré PALLEMAERTS. (May 31, 2005)

NEW CD OF THE BAND "QUATRE" : "SUBMARINE" The band QUATRE, with Nicolas KUMMERT (ts), Marco LOCURCIO (gt), Jacques PILI (el. b.) and Teun VERBRUGGEN (drs) has a second album out, this time on the Italian JATI records label. It is titled "Submarine". It features compositions by the members of the band. (May 28, 2005)

8 SOLO PIANISTS PLAY THE MUSIC OF PIRLY ZURSTRASSEN ON A NEW CD : "POUR L'IVOIRE" The Azeto label releases a new album featuring the music of pianist/composer Pirly ZURSTRASSEN. Titled Pour l'ivoire (Azeto AZ1007), the album presents solo performances by 8 Belgian pianists, each of them playing a composition by Pirly : Fabian FIORINI, Eric LEGNINI, Nathalie LORIERS, Arnould MASSART, Jean-Christophe RENAULT, Kris DEFOORT, Diederik WISSELS, and Pirly himself. KUNSTTIJDSCHRIFT VLAANDEREN : SPECIAL ISSUE ON JAZZ IN BELGIUM The art magazine (in Dutch) "Kunsttijdschrift Vlaanderen" announces that its September 2005 issue will be devoted to jazz in Belgium : "Jazz in België : een interdisciplinaire benadering", with the accent on jazz in Belgium as related to other art forms : classical music, but also photography, visual arts, litterature, even radio/tv etc... HLM (HOUBEN/LOOS/MAURANE) HAS RECORDED A NEW ALBUM HLM, the trio with singer MAURANE, saxophonist/flute player Steve HOUBEN and pianist Charles LOOS, has recorded a new album, live at the Dan LACKSMAN studio. A string quintet was added to the trio for the occasion. (May 23, 2005)

NEW CD OF NO VIBRATO : "YOU ARE IN MY SONG" NO VIBRATO, the band of pianist Etienne RICHARD, has a new album out on the Travers label, entitled You are in my song. The quintet features Frédéric DELPLANCQ (tenor sax), Manu HERMIA (alto & soprano sax), Chris MENTENS (b) and Bilou DONEUX (drs). There are also guests appearances of Daniel STOKART (sop sax), Toine THYS (ten sax) and Lionel BEUVENS (drs). (May 22, 2005)

BOOK OF JAZZ ANECDOTES BY JOSÉ PLUME : "BELGISCHE JAZZVETERANEN VERTELLEN" (IN DUTCH) For those of you who understand Dutch, there is a new book titled "Belgische Jazzveteranen vertellen" by José PLUME, full of anecdotes told by Belgian jazz musicians. NEW CD OF VIBRAPHONIST/SONGWRITER GUY CABAY : "ON THE JAZZ SIDE OF MY STREET" Guy CABAY, the singer songwriter, pianist, vibraphone player and composer, has a new album out on Igloo (mostly instrumental) entitled On the jazz side of my street (Igloo IGL 181). The nucleus includes Jacques PIROTTON (gt), Benoît VANDERSTRAETEN (el. b) and Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs). But there also are some guests appearances of Steve HOUBEN (sax, fl), Phil ABRAHAM (tb), Alexandre CAVALIERE (vl) and Michel HERR (p). Michel also signed some serious string arrangements for three songs (in English, in French and : check out the most luxuruous bossa nova ever recorded in ... Walloon !). Surprises abound. JAZZLAB SERIES REVAMPS ITS WEB SITE JAZZLAB SERIES is a very active association which organizes tours of Flemish and Belgian bands in the circuit of the cultural centers in Flanders. They have recently revamped their web site, which gives all details on the bands and their tour schedules. (May 8, 2005)

THE JACK VAN POLL TRIO ON A DVD OF US SINGER DEE DANIELS We read on the Challenge records web site (NL) that they have recorded a DVD of US singer Dee DANIELS backed up by the trio of Dutch pianist Jack VAN POLL (who lives in Belgium), with Hein VAN DE GEYN (b) and Hans VAN OOSTERHOUT (drs). Dee DANIELS lived in Europe during the eighties and often sang in Holland and in Belgium, a.o. with Jack VAN POLL, or with Bruno CASTELLUCCI, Michel HERR, etc... (May 8, 2005)

NEW CD OF GUITARISTS ROBERTO DI FERNANDO & FRANKIE ROSE : "THE OPEN COUNTRY" Belgian guitarist Frankie ROSE has a new album out, with guitarist Roberto DI FERNANDO, bassist Nick THYS and drummer Laurent MOLLAT. The album is entitled The open country and mixes jazz, folk music, blues, country and latin music. (May 6, 2005)

NEW CD OF PHILIP CATHERINE, ARRANGED BY BERT JORIS FOR THE BJO : "MEETING COLOURS" The French label Dreyfus releases today a new album of guitarist Philip CATHERINE, featuring his impressive playing in a selection of his compositions beautifully arranged by Bert JORIS for the Brussels Jazz Orchestra. The album, recorded in Brussels in the VRT studios, is titled Meeting Colours (Dreyfus FDM 36675-2). A meeting of colours, but also, of master musicians. (April 25, 2005)

APRIL 27, 2005 : JP's JAZZ CLUB : A NEW JAZZ CLUB IN LIEGE IN JACQUES PELZER's HOUSE The house of the late Jacques PELZER in the suburbs of Liège will become a jazz club ! BASSIST JEAN-LOUIS RASSINFOSSE ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THE "LUNDIS d'HORTENSE" A few days ago, the "Lundis d'Hortense", the Belgian association of jazz musicians, elected its new board during its recent General Assembly. The board itself chose bassist Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE to be its chairman for 2 years, a position that Jean-Louis had actually efficiently occupied in the past. We want to congratulate him and wish him good luck for the serious work. (April 21, 2005)

FINAL BAR : DANISH BASS PLAYER NIELS HENNING ORSTED PEDERSEN We've just heard today via Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE and Philip CATHERINE that the Danish bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen has just died from a heart attack at the age of 68. He will be remembered as a brillant virtusoso, a composer and an accomplished musician who played and recorded with thousands of jazz greats, from Oscar PETERSON, Bud POWELL and Joe PASS to Stéphane GRAPELLI, Count BASIE, Dexter GORDON, Archie SHEPP, Anthony BRAXTON or Palle MIKKELBORG. He played a.o. with Philip CATHERINE, in duo recently, and recorded with Philip some albums for Steeplechase : Niels' own albums, albums in trio with Billy HART, with Sam JONES (2 basses), with Dexter GORDON etc...He also played and recorded with Toots THIELEMANS, a.o. with Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs). DRUMMER MIMI VERDERAME TO FORM A BIG BAND During a recent appearance at the Brussels Music Village, drummer Mimi VERDERAME announced his intention to form a big band. Details concerning the band's name, the repertoire and the participants are still unknown. (April 19, 2005)

NEW CD OF THE BILL CARROTHERS TRIO FEAT. NICK THYS & DRÉ PALLEMAERTS : "I LOVE PARIS" The German label "Pirouet" has recently released a trio album by US pianist Bill CARROTHERS, titled "I Love Paris", in which the rhythm section is 100 % Belgian : the bassist is Nicolas THYS and the drummer Dré PALLEMAERTS. APRIL 14, 2005 AT THE SOUNDS : A SUPPORT CONCERT FOR SINGER DANIÈLE COPUS Singer Danièle COPUS has recently sufferered from brain anevrism. To cover her medical expenses, a support concert will be organized by her fellow musicians and friends at the Brussels club SOUNDS on April 14, 2005 (21:00. 10 euros). BASSIST JEAN-LOUIS RASSINFOSSE IN ARGENTINA WITH GUSTAVO BERGALLI Bassist Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE is currently in Argentina, playing some concerts with Argentinian trumpet player Gustavo BERGALLI. Gustavo, after living many years in Sweden, has apparently moved back to his home country. (April 3, 2005)

REISSUE ON CD : MARC MOULIN's "SAM' SUFFY" 30 years after it was recorded, Blue Note records reissues the album "Sam' Suffy" of keyboard player and composer Marc MOULIN, recorded in trio with Richard ROUSSELET (tp) and Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs). There are apparently some bonus tracks : recent remixes of "Tohobohu", and a video clip. (Mar. 31, 2005)

FINAL BAR : COMPOSER / EX-PRODUCER ELIAS GISTELINCK (BRT JAZZORKEST, JAZZ MIDDELHEIM) We've just heard that Elias GISTELINCK died yesterday. Elias GISTELINCK (born 1935) has left an important mark on the Belgian jazz history. Although he was a composer of serious music, his openness and his love for jazz led him to be during many years the producer (and defender) of the BRT (radio) Jazzorkest led by Etienne VERSCHUEREN, and to found some 20 years ago the now famous Jazz Middelheim Festival. Even his composing work occasionally referred to jazz : Ndessé ou Blues (1969), Small cantate for Jeanne Lee (1968), Per Che (1967), Music for Miles (1996), etc... Our thoughts go to his family, who counts some familiar faces on the music scene, namely his two sons, singer David LINX and arranger/producer Peter GISTELINCK. (Mar. 26, 2005)

DAVID LINX RECEIVES THE TITLE OF "CHEVALIER DES ARTS ET DES LETTRES" IN FRANCE Vocalist and songwriter David LINX has received from the hands of the French minister of Culture Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, the title of "chevalier des Arts et des Lettres". Note that David will be the central figure of four night this week at the Brussels Music Village, surrounded by many friends David recently appeared on the posthumous album of French singer Claude NOUGARO and signed numerous acclaimed albums with pianist and composer Diederik WISSELS. THE BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA ON TOUR WITH MARIA SCHNEIDER In the coming days, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra will be on a European tour with US composer/arranger Maria SCHNEIDER. The tour will bring them to Austria and Croatia, to return to Belgium for concerts on March 22, 2005 in Brussels (Flagey) and on March 23 in Ghent (Handelsbeurs). (Mar. 17, 2005)

PIANIST FABIAN FIORINI ON A CD BY JUGALBANDI TRIO AND LIVE WITH PRINT Pianist Fabian FIORINI appears on a recent album (on Home records) of a band named Jugalbandi Trio, featuring Indian based music with Fabian BEGHIN on bansuri and Suman SARKAR on tablas. Fabian also appears these days with the French band PRINT (Sylvain CATHALA, tenor sax; Stéphane PAYEN, alto sax; Jean-Philippe MOREL, bass and Frank VAILLANT, drums), a.o. tonight at the Nam 'n Jazz Festival (Namur). NEW CD : VARIOUS ARTISTS : "LEXICON VAN DE MUZIEK IN WEST VLAANDEREN" Produced by the Province of West-Flanders (B) and Radio Klara (VRT) and supported by Muziekcentrum Vlaanderen, the volume 3 of the "Lexicon van de muziek in West-Vlaanderen, vol. 3" brings the focus on the jazz musicians from the region. These previously unreleased recordings (1978-2004) feature Willy ALBIMOOR (piano), Gilbert ISBIN (guitar), Bart DEFOORT (tenor saxophone), Guy DOSSCHE (baritone saxophone), Erik VERMEULEN (piano), Kris DEFOORT (piano) Bart DE NOLF (double bass), Roger VANHAVERBEKE (double bass) and Jacky EDDYN (alto sax), all recorded by BRT/VRT and RTBF in different contexts and bands (their own small bands, BRT Jazzorkest). PHIL ABRAHAM ON LIVE CD OF LUXEMBURG TRUMPET PLAYER ERNIE HAMMES : "NIGHT LIGHTS" Trombone player Phil ABRAHAM appears on a new album of trumpet player Ernie HAMMES (from Luxemburg), recorded live at the club Inouï in Redange (Lux.) with Frank SPANIOL (sax), Pierre-Alain GOUALCH (p), Johannes SCHAEDLICH (b) and Olivier STRAUCH (drs). PASCAL NOEL STARTS NEW RECORD LABEL : ALWAYS CHRISTMAS After his departure from MPM Productions, which took over the Lyrae label which he created, record producer Pascal NOEL announces that he is launching ALWAYS CHRISTMAS, his new label, with product lines focusing on jazz, world and rock music. NEW CD OF THE RETRO JAZZ ORCHESTRA : "THAT'S MY DESIRE". VIDEO CLIP ON-LINE The old style band "The Retro Jazz Orchestra" has just released an album of jazz standards titled That's My Desire" (Evil Penguin Records) , recorded live at the Music Village in Brussels. With Herman SANDY (tp), Constant LETELLIER (clar.), Joop AYAL (ts), Johnny HOT (p), Walter DE WEERDT (gt), Paul DUBOIS (b, voc.) and Alain COPPY (drs). A little bonus : on the web site of the label, there is a very nice video clip (Windows Media Player required) of "That's my desire" : the sound is good, the pictures are nice and the clip really catches the relaxed atmosphere of the performance. RAY, RELEASE ON FEBRUARY 23 A splendid movie, conceived back in 1988, with Ray Charles himself involved in the production, tracing the extraordinary life story of the blind musician. Excellent motion picture with Jamie Foxx assuming the role of Ray in an outstanding performance and the leading denominator of the story the music, so popular, of Charles. Don't miss it. FEB. 12, 2005 : AKA MOON TO PARTICIPATE IN A TRIBUTE TO FRIEDRICH GULDA The trio AKA MOON (Fabrizio CASSOL, Michel HATZIGEORGIOU, Stéphane GALLAND) will participate on Feb. 12, 2005 (20:00) in a concert for Child Focus at the Brussels Cirque Royal to pay a tribute to the late Austrian pianist and composer Friedrich GULDA. GULDA made several incursions into jazz and wrote music for several ensembles; he even recorded some LPs of his big band music and duets with Chick COREA. Aka Moon will appear next to a mostly classical program (with a.o. pianist Martha ARGERICH etc..), playing Gulda's concerto for cello and wind instruments and a special trio appearance in a tribute to the Austrian musician. FEB 17, 2005 : A BENEFIT CONCERT FOR BASSIST OTTI VAN DER WERF Electric bassist Otti VAN DER WERF recently suffered a brain hemorragy. A benefit concert will be organized at Flagey on Feb. 17 to collect some money to help Otti to pay his hospital bills. Octurn will play in the first half, and friends will join in for a second set. FINAL BAR : DRUMMER GARCIA MORALES We have just been informed of the death of drummer Garcia MORALES, after a long illness, on Jan. 1st, 2005 at 5 a.m. . The sun of trumpet player Janot MORALES, Garcia was an all around drummer, at ease in jazz, fusion, funk (JJ Band) and pop music. He played and recorded a.o. with Marc MOULIN (Placebo), Philip CATHERINE, John THOMAS (gt), etc...He did part of his career on the German scene, accompanying pianist Eugen CICERO and several pop singers. More recently, he was the drums teacher at the Brussels Conservatory (jazz dept, Flemish section) and played a.o. with Alex SCORIER and his Brussels Little Big Band. (Jan. 3, 2005)
