LES LUNDIS D'HORTENSE, the Association of Belgian Jazz Musician will resume his noon concerts at the Hôtel Charlier in Brussels.

  • On February 10 (12:30) : Pirly ZURSTRASSEN's LES VISITEURS DU SOIR, with Pirly ZURTRASSEN (piano, compositions), Daniel STOKART (saxes), Vincent TROUBLE (accordeon) and Marie-Sophie TALBOT (vocals & percussion).

  • NEW CD ALBUM, IVAN PADUART
    Pianist and composer Ivan PADUART just released his 7th CD album.
    CLAIR OBSCUR is a tribute to another pianist and composer, Fred HERSCH whose compositions are played by Ivan, Nic. Thys and Hans Van Oosterhout.
    This last, but not least, release will close our list of CDS for 1997, (over 30). It has been a very prolific year and we are looking to a similar '98.

    NEW YEAR FESTIVITY IN LIÈGE
    The MAISON DU JAZZ de Liège organizes a jazz night on january 24th.
    The purpose of the happening is to raise funds toward future continuation of activities. Therfore, a dinner of "choucroute alsacienne" + dessert, conbined with a long night of jam session, featuring our best musicians will be offered.
    Entry fee is 550 Frs. and reservations are compulsary, before january 10.

    AKA MOON : NEW CD "ELOHIM"
    AKA MOON is very productive these days. Carbon 7 announces the release of the album Elohim (Carbon 7 C7 027), with, around the AKA MOON nucleus (Fabrizio CASSOL on sax, Michel HATZIGEORGIOU on bass and Stéphane GALLAND on drums), David LINX (vocals), Guillaume ORTI (alto sax), Bo VAN DER WERF (baritone sax), Geoffroy DE MASURE (trombone), Kris DEFOORT (electric piano), Benoît DELBECQ (synthesizer, sampler) and Eric LEGNINI (piano, synth., organ).

    MAL WALDRON : NEW CD
    BMG Records Belgium announces the release of a new CD of Mal WALDRON. The American pianist living in Brussels is surrounded by Steve COLEMAN (alto sax), Joe HENDERSON (tenor sax), Reggie WORKMAN (bass), Andrew CYRILLE (drums) and Jeanne LEE (vocals). The album, recorded in Antwerp, was titled after Waldron's well known composition "Soul Eyes", recorded by John COLTRANE. "Soul Eyes" BMG 74321 538872.

    ERIC LEGNINI ON LATEST STEFANO DI BATTISTA CD
    Pianist Eric LEGNINI appears on a recent CD of Italian saxophonist Stefano DI BATTISTA : "Volare" (Label Bleu LBLC 6613) in the company od Flavio BOLTRO (trumpet), Rosario BONACORSO (bass) and Benjamin HENOCQ (drums).

    Electric bassist Daniel ROMEO has recorded the material for a future CD with his funk jazz band that includes Kurt VAN HERCK (saxes), Eric LEGNINI (piano) and Bert GIELEN (organ).

    TANGRAM : FIRST CD
    The Travers (E-mail : travers@cyclone.be) announces the release of the first CD of the TANGRAM Trio. Titled "Ring Ouest" (Skat records), it features Marie-Sophie TALBOT (piano, compositions), Philippe LALOY (flute, saxophones) and Frédéric MALEMPRE (percussion).

    MARITO CORREA BACK IN BELGIUM
    On December 16, Brazilian songwriter Marito CORREA is expected to be back in Belgium where he intends to stay for a while. Marito recorded a superb CD of his songs with Belgian jazzmen Steve HOUBEN (saxes, flute), Michel HERR (piano, kb) and Stéphan POUGIN (percussion).

    GRAND OPENING OF A NEW JAZZ CLUB
    The KATOEN CLUB in Westerlo has launched its activities on December 12th with a performance given by the Philip CATHERINE trio.
    A full house of cheering audience enthusiastically welcomed the group. It was, probably, also a last occasion (for some time) to see Philippe AERTS who on the 23d of the month departs for a long stint in the US, where he's to join the Toshiko AKYOSHI/Lew TABACKIN big band.

    Next concert, at the Katoen Club, is scheduled for February 13 '98 (20:30h) featuring the SUMARI, flamenco-jazz project with Jose Toral RODRIGUEZ, flamenco-guitar, percussion / Stefan BRACAVAL, flute / Michel BISCEGLIA, piano / Serge DACOSSE, electric bass.

    The very sympathetic and cosy JAZZ8 club in Spy is facing financial difficulties and unless an unexpected help will come soon, the place will have to cease it's activities.

    THE SPRING OF / SPECIAL Félix SIMTAINE
    The next festival of Lundis d'Hortense will be held on March 28 & 29 1998, at the theatre 140. As drummer and band leader Félix SIMTAINE will be celebrating his 60th anniversary, the LDH board of director has voted to give him a carte blanche to present a program of his choice on the 28th. Details to follow.
    Next year, Félix's ACT BIG BAND will celebrate 20 years of existance. The organizers of the Liège festival (April 24 & 25) have invited Act Big Band to perform on the 24th of April.

    On November 27, ELKA COLOR presents JAZZFOTOBOEK, apparently a new book of photos by Theo BOELEN and JEANSCHOUBS, at "Taverne De Schenkerij", Genutstraat 3 in Bilzen, from 20:30.     KATOEN CLUB (Cotton Club) WESTERLO a New Jazz Clubs
    Good news for jazz lovers, the vzw Donkisjot has taken the initiative to program a series of jazz concerts to take place in Westerlo.
    Not the center of the world, you might say. Nevertheless, it is centrally located and accessible from a number of key locations like Leuven, Mechelen, Lier, Turnhout, Geel, Hasselt.

    The location for the concerts is in the "Krekke" a theater of 200 places presenting a combination of outstanding acoustics and intimate atmosphere which contribute toward optimal contacts between public & musicians.

    1st concert is scheduled on December 12th (20:30h), featuring PHILIP CATHERINE TRIO with the intention to pursue with other concerts of quality, in line with the opening one.

    New Erik VERMEULEN / ICARUS CONSORT CD
    Pianist Erik VERMEULEN and his group "Icarus Consort" have just released a first CD on the Igloo label. Titled "Into Pieces" (Igloo Igl 137), it also features Pierre BERNARD (flute), Erwin VANN (sax), Nicolas THYS (bass) and Stéphane GALLAND (drums).

    MOTIVES FOR JAZZ, THE NEW JAZZ ORGANIZATION IN LIMBURG
    MOTIVES FOR JAZZ is a brand new initiative of JAZZCONNECTION LIMBURG, a partnership between the Province of Limburg (Provinciaal Centrum voor muziek - Casino), the 4 cultural centers of Bilzen, Heusden-Zolder, Maasmechelen and Peer, plus 2 jazzclubs of the Limburg area, "The Mood" & "Maazz".
    MOTIVES FOR JAZZ introduces itself as "the quality label for a series of jazz concerts covering a whole season (Sept. - June), ranging from traditional jazz to contemporary hip-hop, funk and other influences". The series will present Belgian artists (Bo VAN DER WERF Quartet, Philip CATHERINE, AKA MOON, Peter HERTMANS etc...) as well as international names (Lester BOWIE, Bill EVANS & Push, Fernando TARRES,...).
    JAZZCONNECTION LIMBURG wants to inform the jazz fans about the MOTIVES FOR JAZZ concerts via a special newsletter that includes all informations about the concerts and the organization.     Roger VAN HA | Deborah BROWN : new CD
    American singer, regular on the Belgian jazz scene, Deborah Brown who has been performing since long years with bass player and The New Look Trio leader Roger Van Haverbeke have produced a new CD album, recorded live.
    The title is LIVE at the Blue Note (Halle/Belgium).
    The production is done by Roger Van HA under the trade mark VH

    Michel BISCEGLIA : first CD
    BMG Belgium/RCA Victor just released the first CD of Belgian pianist Michel BISCEGLIA, "About Stories" (74321 530802), featuring US trumpet player Randy BRECKER and saxophonist Bob MINTZER, plus Werner LAUSCHER on bass and Marc LÉHAN on drums. The album presents compositions of the pianist. BMG Belgium seems to start a jazz policy these days, as they also announced the release in November '97 of a new Mal WALDRON CD "Soul Eyes", with Jeanne LEE, Abbey LINCOLN, Joe HENDERSON, Steve COLEMAN, Andrew CYRILLE and Reggie WORKMAN. Both albums were produced and recorded in Belgium, but will be distributed worldwide.

    AKA MOON : new CD "Ganesh"
    The group AKA MOON has just released on the Carbon 7 label a new CD, titled "Ganesh" (Carbon 7 C7-026). It features, besides the well known core of three musicians, saxophonist Fabrizio CASSOL, bassist Michel HATZIGEORGIOU and drummer Stéphane GALLAND, a few guests, namely French guitar player Marc DUCRET, Umayalpuram SIVARAMAN (mridangam), Chander SARDJOE (drs), Pierre VAN DORMAEL (guitar) and baritone saxophonist Bo VANDERWERF.

    New work about Bobby JASPAR
    On October 21st '97, Jean-Pol SCHROEDER's latest work about Bobby JASPAR will be officially presented at the Liège Hôtel de Ville.
    The new book is titled "Bobby Jaspar - Itinéraires d'un Jazzman Européen" Editions Mardaga - Conseil de la Musique.
    Jean-Pol, who's responsible for LA MAISON DU JAZZ has already written some interesting books, namely DICTIONNAIRE DU JAZZ EN WALLONIE ET A BRUXELLES and HISTOIRE DU JAZZ A LIEGE (1900-1980).

    Phil ABRAHAM touring with Michel PETRUCCIANI
    Trombone player (and vocalist) Phil ABRAHAM has now made a name for himself as well on the French jazz scene (where he is member of the O.N.J.) as on the Belgian jazz scene. Phil has been asked to join the Michel PETRUCCIANI sextet on their next tour (end October '97), replacing Bob BROOKMEYER.

    Phil ABRAHAM's latest CD En Public (Lyrae LY9506007), recorded live with Michel HERR piano), Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE (bass) and Stéphane GALLAND (drs), has been selected as Record of the Month by the French "Jazz Magazine". (Oct. 2, 97)

    Sabam Prize to TOOTS
    On September 22nd '97, Toots THIELEMANS received a special Sabam Prize for his whole musical career. This year by the way, both Sabam (the Belgian Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers) and Toots celebrated their 75th anniversary. (Oct. 2,97)

    RESULTS OF THE 19th EUROP' JAZZ CONTEST
    The 19th addition of the Euro contest, in Hoeilaart (near Brussels) took place on Sat. Sept. 27 & Sun. Sept.28.
    There been 60 entries from 15 countries, where Italy was this year the guest of honor, out of which 8 were selected for the finals.
      first prize : Rosario Giuliani Quartet - Italy
      second prize: Poul Reimann Trio - Denmark
      third prize: Ivan Pharmakovsky Quartet - Russia
      fourth prize: Alexi Tuamarila / Thor De Boos Trio - Belgium
      fifth prize: Randalu-Sendelbach-Janke - Germany
      and ex aequo:
        Blue Bird Conversation - Italy
        Free Sons Sextet - France
        Alexander Shevtsov's trio - Russia

    Best soloist prize went to Rosario Giuliani of Italy, SABAM prize was awarded to Alexi Tuamarila / Thor De Boos Trio for their rendering of "Sir Ralf" (Stefaan Debevere).
    The most promising young group prize went to Alexi Tuamarila / Thor De Boos Trio and the public choice prize was awarded to Poul Reimann trio.

    Rosario Giuliani will be giving 2 concerts:

      October 1st in Roeselare and October 3 in Gouvy.

    Michel HERR's European Quintet in the recording studio
    Pianist/Composer Michel HERR recorded in September with the Michel HERR EUROPEAN QUINTET. A few years after his internationally acclaimed and awarded trio CD "Intuitions", jazz fans will definitely be anxious to hear this new recording. The Quintet consists of Michel HERR (piano, compositions), Bert JORIS (trumpet), Wolfgang ENGSTFELD (tenor sax, Germany), Riccardo DEL FRA (double bass, Italy) and Dré PALLEMAERTS (drums). The Quintet, which made a.o. a very successful appearance during the Jazz Middelheim Festival in Antwerp (August 97), recorded 8 compositions of the pianist, who is now searching for a label to release the album.     Mid October, trumpetist Laurent Blondiau, with his group ( Nathalie Loriers, Peter Hertmans, Jan de Haas, Otti Van Der Werf) are recording their 1st Cd.

    Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE on tour with Klaus IGNATZEK
    Bass player Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE will hit the road these days for a 5 week European tour with the band of German pianist Klaus IGNATZEK.     Quetzal Records is now releasing the new Charles Loos & Jean-Pierre Catoul CD : "Summer Winds" (Qz 106).
    The duo will be performing live at the Theatre 140 in Brussels on monday , October 20th at 8:30 PM, prior to the Egberto Gismonti concert.

    Also available today is the " Carnet d'Emeraude " Premier Recueil - The long awaited first selection from the radio program of the same name. The album features tracks from Friedemann, Marc Moulin, Charles Loos & Arnould Massart Philip Catherine, Nono Garcia, Wim Mertens, Mireille Gleizes, The Castellucci Stringtet and Eric Legnini.     RTBF La Deux : Jazz evening cancelled on Sept. 6
    RTBF is not going to broadcast the jazz evening scheduled for September 6th. It will be replaced by a special program covering the funerals of Lady Di. The program was supposed to be the "7th Night of European Jazz", recorded at the Northsea Jazz Festival. Strange title, as there were not many Europeans announced, not to mention Belgians : Marcus MILLER and the Legends, Madeleine PEYROUX, Joshua REDMAN, the Dutch group WHITE HOUSE and Ray CHARLES. Let's hope again that in the future, Belgian artists will have their turn...(Sept. 5, 97)

    Philippe AERTS active in the US
    Bassist Philippe AERTS is making concrete moves to develop his activities in the States. In December, he will be playing over there with saxophonist Lew TABACKIN and has been offered the bass seat in the Toshiko AKYIOSHI/Lew TABACKIN Big Band, that plays a.o. every Monday night at New York's Birdland.     Two new CDs of Charles LOOS
    Pianist Charles LOOS has two new CDs out : the first one, on the Igloo label, a fusion project with saxophone/clarinet player André DONNI and the ethnic group ASSOUAS from Morocco (recorded there, live, in April), and the second one on the Quetzal label, "Summer Winds", a duo effort with violin player Jean-Pierre CATOUL, featuring 9 original compositions of the two musicians.     Record producer and music publisher Pierre PLETINCKX, who spent his long career producing many Belgian jazz records, died last Saturday, Aug. 23. His label B.     The Belgian movie "Just Friends", directed by Marc-Henri Wajnberg, will be presented by Arte TV on Sunday August , 3, 20:45 and Tuesday August 5, 24:20. Don't miss it, it is full of jazz.
    It tells the story (vaguely inspired by the life of the late Jack SELS), in the fifties, of an Antwerp jazz saxophonist (played by actor Josse DE PAUW ), who works in the harbour and unloads bananas during the daytime, but whose dream is to go and pursue his carreer in the US.

    TRIBUTE TO SADI
    SADI will celebrate, coming October 23, his 70th birthday.

    Prize Distributions : Belgian jazzmen honored
    The ceremony of the '97 Django d'Or Prizes took place in Paris on June 19 at Salle Pleyel and was aired on French TV France 3 on June 21st. The concert showed a.o. the two Belgian "Django d'Or", pianist Charles LOOS and saxophonist Kurt VAN HERCK performing together.
    On June 26, it is saxophonist Fabrice ALLEMAN's turn to formally receive his Nicolas Dor Prize for best Belgian performance during the '97 Liège Festival. (June 25, 97)

    The results of the Contest co-sponsored by the J@ZZ@ROUND jazz magazine and LYRAE records were announced on May 24, 97 at the Sounds (Brussels). First Prize goes to the group IMPRESSION, from Lille (France). They will record a CD for Lyrae records. Second Prize goes to Belgian group NIGHT WALK, who will record a demo. Both groups will benefit from a promotion tour. (May 25, 97)

    Toots THIELEMANS on VTM TV : May 24, 97 (22:25) :
    On May 24, 97 (22:25), the Flemish TV VTM showed the first part of Toots THIELEMANS' memorable 75th birthday concert, that took place on Friday, April 25, at 20:30 at Forest National, Brussels.
    The 50' long program featured Toots surrounded by top musicians from Brazil, such as pianist/songwriter Ivan LINS, pianist Eliane ELIAS, guitarists/songwriters Oscar CASTRO-NEVES and Dori CAYMMI. (May 22, 97)

    The BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA recorded live
    The BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA has recorded the material for a live CD at the occasion of its spring tour '97. It will be produced and released by the BRTN record label and will feature music written by Belgian jazz composers such as : Bert JORIS, Michel HERR, Frank VAGANEE etc...(May 22, 97)

    Nat ADDERLEY's concert (May 21) cancelled in Antwerp. Bert JORIS to step in.
    The concert that US trumpet player Nat ADDERLEY was to give at Antwerp's Den Hopper has been cancelled. The club asked Bert JORIS (trumpet) to come up with a replacement band. It will include Kurt VAN HERCK (sax), Michel HERR (piano), Philippe AERTS (bass) and Dutch drummer Joost VAN SCHAIK. (May 19, 97)

    Drummer Félix SIMTAINE to accompany American singer Mandy GAINES during her coming European tour.
    Having lost her drummer, during last tour, Mandy GAINES called on Félix to play with her to the end of the tour. The association is to continue during the next tour, October 15 to November 15. They will be joined by Pascal MICHAUX, saxophone, and American bass player now residing in Brussels, John PETERSON. (May 14, 97)

    Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE, Lundis d'Hortense's new president
    Veteran of the Belgian and European scene, bass player Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE, who is an active musician since 25 years, has assumed the role of president, for the next 2 years, of the LUNDIS D'HORTENSE, the Belgian Jazz Musicians Association.
    Congratulations, Jean-Louis ! Keep up the good work and thanks to former president Charles LOOS for 4 years of hard work. (May 14, 97)

    A new DUO is born : Jean-Pierre CATOUL and Charles LOOS.
    A CD is currently being recorded by QUETZAL to be released by end summer.
    The duo will appear at the TRAVERS on June 13 & 14.
    Furthermore, the LIPSTIC label has issued a double CD jazz compilation, aimed at the Asian Pacific region and has included a selection from the CATOUL/MICAULT album. (May 11, 97)

    THE "NICOLAS DOR PRIZE" TO FABRICE ALLEMAN :
    The Fabrice ALLEMAN Quartet received the "Nicolas Dor Prize" for his concert at the Liège Festival on May 3. The award goes to the best performance of a Belgian band during the 3 days festival. Furthermore, the group had been selected by the RTBF radio to be recorded live in an exchange of radio programs for the CRPLF (Communauté des Radios Publiques de Langue Française), in which the public radio stations of France, Switserland and Canada participate.
    The quartet was composed of : Fabrice ALLEMAN (tenor, soprano sax), Michel HERR (piano), Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE (bass) and Frédéric JACQUEMIN (drs).
    The forthcoming CD of the Fabrice ALLEMAN Quartet, to be released in the fall by Igloo records, will include a few tracks recorded live at the Liège Festival and some additional ones, recorded in the studio. (May 11, 97)

    J@ZZ@ROUND / LYRAE new talent contest
    The results of the contest cosponsored by jazz magazine J@ZZ@ROUND and the LYRAE label will be announced on the evening of May 24th (20:30), at the Sounds, in Brussels. The winner will be selected by a jury of professionnals as a talent deserving wider recognition in the field of "jazz et musiques actuelles" (which is the subtitle of the J@zz@round magazine).
    Have reached the finals : Eric DUBOIS Sextet (F), The CHAPTER (B), IMPRESSION (F), KON TIKI (B), NIGHT WALK (B), SLOONG Quartet (B), OPIUM (B), QUARTET A LA BASE (F).
    Pianist Charles LOOS will introduce the winner, who will then play a set. The evening will continue with a jam session. The prize is : the recording of a CD (on Lyrae records), and a promotion tour. (May 11, 97)

    Bert JORIS at the Bern Jazz Festival
    Trumpet player Bert JORIS recently led the big band of the Swiss Jazz School at the Bern Jazz Festival (Switserland), featuring US soloists such as saxophonist Bob MINTZER and trumpet player Bobby SHEW, in a program of his pieces and Mintzer's.
    He also had the opportunity to play on a "trumpet night" with Bobby SHEW and Wallace RONEY plus the Hank JONES Trio. (May 11, 97)

    Beginning of May, the Nathalie LORIERS Trio (with Sal LA ROCCA, bass; Hans VAN OOSTERHOUT, drs) and Philip CATHERINE played in Canada. (May 11, 97)

    BLEU BANANE's first issue due in June
    BLEU BANANE, the new Belgian jazz Magazine, is now more than a project. The first issue of the new quarterly magazine is expected within days. Writers are among the veterans of the defunct JAZZ IN TIME : Daniel MEYER, Jacques ONAN, Jean-Pol SCHROEDER, Guy THYS and Jean-Pierre URBAIN. The contents will be focused on in-depth studies of jazz related topics.

    L'AME DES POETES back from African tour
    L'AME DES POETES (the Trio that puts famous French songs to a jazzy sauce) just returned from a month tour though West Africa (Burkina Fasso, Mali, etc). Saxophonist Pierre VAIANA, who currently lives and teaches in Dakkar, Sénégal, was joined by guitarist Fabien DEGRYSE and bassist Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE. They participated in concerts, festivals and workshops. (May 11, 97)

    Drummer Michel DEBRULLE
    Drummer Michel DEBRULLE, known for his playing a.o. with TRIO BRAVO, and more recently TRIO GRANDE, with French saxophone/clarinet player Laurent DEHORS and tuba/trombone player Michel MASSOT (B), is also a member of DEHORS' big band "Tous dehors" based in Rouen (France). (May 11, 97)

    News from LES LUNDIS D'HORTENSE
    LES LUNDIS D'HORTENSE will be associated with the BRUSSELS JAZZ MARATHON, 30, 31st May & June 1st.
    June 1st will be the Lundis d'Hortense day : a selection of Belgian bands will be featured in concert on the big podium of the Brussels Market Place, starting at 18.00.

  • The Lundis will be associated this year with the Junas Jazz Festival, located in the south of France (near Nîmes), thanks to the support of the Brussels Region. The festival will be called "JAZZ A JUNAS - The Languedoc-Roussillon meets Brussels". 30 Belgian musicians will participate.

    Erwin VANN on BRTN TV
    Saturday, May 17, 22:55 : BRTN TV 2 presented its program "Passage", centered around saxophonist Erwin VANN.
    Erwin will appear with his trio, the "Inner Peace Band", that includes bassist Michel HATZIGEORGIOU and drummer Dré PALLEMAERTS. Other guests will be : SHENIKE (vocals), the group INGANZO, Patrick RIGUELLE (vocals & gt).
    The program was presented by Fred BROUWERS and was recorded at Café Bier in Oostende.

    May 13th, 97 : Vocal Night in Arras, France
    A rare opportunity to hear two first class vocal events was offered in the Théâtre of Arras, France :
    The quartet of vocalist David LINX and pianist Diederik WISSELS, with bassist Frans Jan VANDERHOEVEN and drummer Tony RABESON and a new duo, a premiere performance of U.S. singer Judy NIEMACK with pianist Michel HERR.

    TOOTS 75th birthday celebration, April 25th.
    A special concert, celebrating Toots THIELEMANS birthday took place on Friday, April 25, at 20:30h at Forest National, Brussels.
    Belgian and international jazz artists of great fame have participated.
    TOOTS was surrounded by many friends and long time associates : his current US rhythm section : Kenny WERNER (p), Scott COLLEY (b), Billy HART (drs); guitarist Philip CATHERINE, Dutch pianist Bert VAN DEN BRINK, his Belgian friends Michel HERR (p, kb), Michel HATZIGEORGIOU (el. b.), Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs), Bart de NOLF (b.) as well as top musicians from Brazil, such as pianist/songwriter Ivan LINS, pianist Eliane ELIAS, guitarists/songwriters Oscar CASTRO-NEVES and Dori CAYMI. It was a sold-out (7.000 seats !). The whole evening was recorded by a Dutch television.
    In the beginning of May, Toots performed at the New York Blue Note.

    Michel HERR Trio meets Joe LOVANO
    On March 23, 97, the Trio of pianist Michel HERR (with Philippe AERTS on bass and Dré PALLEMAERTS on drums) played with US saxophone player Joe LOVANO in Terneuzen, Holland.

    Death of Willy HEREMANS, of the Antwerp JAzzcorner
    On March 21, 97, Willy HEREMANS left us. Although not a familiar name for the public, he was well known among jazz record collectors. For 20 years, he ran the "Jazzcorner" in Antwerp, one of Belgium's most famous record shops.

    Roger Van HAVERBEKE plays in trio every Sunday, 10:30 - 14:30 at the Brussels Hilton, for the rest of the year

    February 03 : Phil ABRAHAM in the next ONJ
    Phil ABRAHAM (trombone, vocal) is in for another cycle with the O.N.J.
    The periodical change (every 3 years) of bandleader for the French ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE JAZZ (O.N.J.) is to occur coming September 1997. The new designated bandleader to take charge is bassist/composer Didier LEVALLET.
    Phil has been asked to remain for another 3 years.
    Congratulations, Phil!
    Phil is also featured on a new CD of the O.N.J, launched on May 14 at the "Petit Journal Montparnassee", Paris.
    Good news come in batch... JAZZ HOT #537, Feb. '97 has a two page feature about Phil.
