NEW CD OF GUITARISTS FRANKIE ROSE AND DANIEL MIRANDA : "RENCONTRE"
Guitarists Frankie ROSE and Daniel MIRANDA (from Brazil ) have a cd out, titled "Rencontre", with original material by Miranda and Rose as well as a selection of other songs.
A tour will take place in January on the occasion of the release of the album, on which one can also hear Perry ROSE (voc.), Osvaldo HERNANDEZ (percussion ) and David NUNEZ (violin).

NEW CD OF ALTO SAXOPHONIST STÉPHANE MERCIER : "SAFE & SOUND IN LONG ISLAND CITY"
Alto saxophonist Stéphane MERCIER, who recently returned to Europe after staying in New York for a few years, recorded an album before leaving the US, with : Nicolas THYS (b), Daniel JODOCY (drs) and Ryan SCOTT (gt). The album, recorded at home, is now available under the title "Safe and sound in Long Island City" (Crea-son OR 002).

"FOUR" : GUITARIST MARCO LOCURCIO's NEW QUARTET WILL HAVE A FIRST ALBUM IN MARCH 2003
FOUR, the new quartet of guitarist Marco LOCURCIO will have a first album out in March 2003 on the MOGNO label, with Nicolas KUMMERT (sax), Jacques PILI (el. b.) and Lieven VENKEN (drs).

POSTHUMOUS CD RELEASE OF PIANIST MAL WALDRON WITH ARCHIE SHEPP
The German label ENJA has just released what may well be the last recording session of the late pianist and composer Mal WALDRON. Recorded in February 2002, "Left Alone revisited" (ENJA CD9141-2) is a duo album with saxophonist Archie SHEPP, featuring a program of standards in a tribute to Billie HOLIDAY.

SOME JAZZ MUSICIANS PARTICIPATE IN THEATER PERFORMANCE "ÇA Y EST, JE VOLE"
"Ça y est, je vole" is a play/performance written by Laurence VIELLE and Eric D'AGOSTINO which will be performed at Theatre Marni, Brussels, Dec.21-28, 2002. Playing live on stage will be some classical musicians and some jazzmen, such as : Barbara WIERNIK (voc), Erwin VANN (sax), Michel HATZIGEORGIOU (b) and Fabien DEGRYSE (gt).

MOUTHPIECE MAKER AND INVENTOR OF THE AULOCHROME, FRANÇOIS LOUIS HAS A WEB SITE
François LOUIS, who gained worldwide reputation with his saxophone mouthpieces (made for Joe LOVANO, Bob BERG, etc...) and who is also the inventor of the aulochrome, a new musical instrument recently played by Fabrizio CASSOL, has a web site : http://www.francois-louis.com/. THE COMEBACK OF ALTO SAXOPHONIST PETER VANDENDRIESSCHE WITH A NEW BAND : "CHROMATIC BANANA"
After a very long absence, as performing musician, sax player Peter VANDENDRIESSCHE decided to get back on the scene with a new formed band "Chromatic Banana" with: Dirk SCHREURS (kb), Roman KOROLIK (b.) and Koen VANDENDRIESSCHE (drs). The band proposes compositions by its members, in a fusion and jazz bag.

  • DJANGOS D'OR 2002 : ANNE WOLF RECEIVES THE "NEW TALENT" AWARD
    The Belgian Django d'Or 2002 awards have been distributed on Friday December 13 at Flagey, Brussels.
    Philippe AERTS received his Django d'Or as "Jazz Musician of the Year", Rik BEVERNAGE (De Werf in Bruges) his "Special prize" of the Jury and the "new talent" prize went to pianist and composer Anne WOLF.

    RTBF TV SHOWED "THREE DAYS IN APRIL", RARE FOOTAGE WITH SADI, PLACEBO & RENÉ THOMAS
    On December 9, RTBF tv "La 2" broadcasted "Three days in April", a 55' film showing three important Belgian jazz figures, apparently filmed in the early seventies :
  • guitarist René THOMAS, in trio with bassist Freddie DERONDE and drummer Félix SIMTAINE
  • vibraphone player SADI in quartet with Bob PORTER (p), Roger VANHAVERBEKE (bass) and Freddy ROTTIER (drs)

  • PIANIST JEF NEVE : A NEW ALBUM IN THE SPRING
    The Jeff NEVE trio is working on its first album. The players are Jef NEVE (piano), Piet VERBIST (double bass), Lieven VENKEN or Teun VERBRUGGEN (drums).
    The cd will be released in the beginning of May 2003.

    JANUARY 21, 2003 : 10thANNIVERSARY CONCERT OF DAVID LINX / DIEDERIK WISSELS
    Celebrating 10 years of musical partnership, the David LINX / Diederik WISSELS band will play, January 21st 2003 at the Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, with Christophe WALLEMME (bass), Stéphane HUCHARD (drs) and special guests : Tore BRUNBORG (saxes), Nguyên LÊ (gt) and David VENITUCCI (accordeon).
    Their new CD, to be released in the spring, has been recorded with the same team.
    The December 2002 issue of Jazzman selected the album "Upclose" among the best productions of the last decade.

    FINAL BAR : PIANIST & COMPOSER MAL WALDRON DIES ON DEC. 2, 2002 IN BRUSSELS (updated Dec. 6, 2002)
    We hear that on the evening of Dec. 2, 2002, US pianist and composer Mal WALDRON (born 1925) passed away in a Brussels hospital. Mal, who lived in Brussels for many years, has been Billie HOLIDAY's pianist in the fifties, then played with many important figures of avant-guarde jazz : Charlie MINGUS, John COLTRANE, Archie SHEPP, Joe HENDERSON, Jeanne LEE, Judy NIEMACK, Abbey LINCOLN, etc... He recently released a trio album with saxophonist Steve LACY and bassist Jean-Jacques AVENEL, titled "One More Time" (Sketch SKE 33023). One should not underestimate his talents as a composer either. One of his most famous compositions, "Soul Eyes", was recorded by many jazzmen, starting with John COLTRANE himself.
    Our thoughts go to his large family.
    Update Dec. 6, 2002 : Funeral will take place on Saturday Dec. 7 (11:15), at the Uccle crematorium, avenue du silence 61, 1180 Brussels.

    DEC. 13, 2002 at FLAGEY (BRUSSELS) : DJANGO'S D'OR AWARDS EVENING
    The Belgian Django d'Or 2002 will be awarded on Friday December 13 20h15 at Flagey, Studio 4 (Brussels, place Ste Croix).
    The program of the evening includes 3 awards:
    • 1. the Django d'Or, Trophée Belge du Jazz ("Jazz Musician of the Year"), by a jury of musicians and people involved with the jazz scene, presided by Philippe BARON (RTBF) will be given by SABAM to the best Belgian musician of the year, and will go to Philippe AERTS ;
    • 2. The Special Jury prize, also by Sabam, will be awarded to a person who during all his career endavoured to promote the cause of jazz in Belgium, this year it is given to Rik BEVERNAGE (De Werf in Bruges) ;
    • 3. The New Talent Prize, designated by a jury of professionals and specialists presided by Marc DANVAL, ... The name will be revealed during the ceremony.

    NEW CD OF THE CHARLES LOOS / ANDRÉ DONNI QUARTET : "JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS"
    "Just one of those things" (WAZIF 5425010750014) is the title of a new album of the quartet formed by Charles LOOS (p) and clarinet/sax player André DONNI, with Jean VAN LINT on double bass and Luc VANDEN BOSCH on drums. The cd proposes various compositions by the members of the band, plus a few standards. It is available as of Dec. 02 2002 from theWAZIF Online store.

    BARBARA WIERNIK PAYS A TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL
    Travelling Joni Mitchell is the name of a new project by singer Barbara WIERNIK, with Bette CRYNS (guitar), Michel HATZIGEORGIOU (bass) and Michel SEBA (percussion).
    First appearance on Dec. 7, 2002 at the Studio Athanor in Brussels.
    Besides, we learn that in the future, the duo Barbara had with Jozef DUMOULIN should be modified into in duo with pianist Nathalie LORIERS.

Wherever you are on the planet, you can now follow this daily program in real time, thanks to MP3 streaming, as long as you have the appropriate software to hear it. As far as we are concerned, RealPlayer did the job, but there are other players on every platform which can do it, too.

    BASSIST CHRISTOPHE DEVISSCHER IN THE BAND THAT WON THE "FRAZZ CROSSOVER COMPETITION" (NL)
    Bassist Christophe DEVISSCHER informs us that he played with the Mike ROELOFS Quartet, featuring Mike ROELOFS (Holland - piano), Frank SACKENHEIM (Germany - tenor sax), Jonas BURGWINKEL (Germany - drums), the band that has won the Frazz Crossover Competition, held in Leeuwarden (northern Holland) last weekend.
    The new trio TRIX, led by Christophe DEVISSCHER, featuring Bart VAN CAENEGEM (piano) and Jonas BURGWINKEL (drums, replacing Dutch drummer Geert ROELOFS), also made it to the finals of the same competition.

    JAZZ PHOTOS BY JOS L. KNAEPEN IN DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE AND ON VARIOUS WEB SITES
    The Belgian photographer Jos L. KNAEPEN has a picture published in the US magazine Down Beat (November issue). It is Wallace RONEY during the first ever Down Beat Blindfold Test outside the USA, a shot taken during the North Sea Jazz Festival last July. Another picture, of Joe ZAWINUL, taken during his 70th Birthday Celebration at the Leverkusener Jazztage, Germany, will be published in Down Beat in the coming months.

    PANTA RHEI : A WORLD MUSIC BAND WITH A.O. STEVE HOUBEN : NEW CD "STRIDES"
    The Belgian band "Panta Rhei" presents its original renditions of folk music from Europe, and a few original compositions. Some of the musicians also have a jazz background : saxophonist/flute player Steve HOUBEN, percussionnist Stephan POUGIN and bassist Arne VAN DONGEN. The group has a new album out, titled "Strides" (Wild Boar Music). It is not jazz, but if you are interested in world music with a prospective and evolutive approach, check their web site for more infos on this record.

    IGLOO REISSUES ON CD ARNOULD MASSART's "THREE TO GET READY" ALBUM (1984/85)
    The Igloo label has reissued a trio album of pianist Arnould MASSART, titled " Three to Get Ready", recorded in 1984/85 with bassist Philippe AERTS and drummer Philippe MOBERS. Three previously unreleased tracks have been added to the material coming from the original LP.

    BASSIST SAL LA ROCCA RECORDS HIS FIRST SOLO ALBUM
    Bassist Sal LA ROCCA will soon make his recording debut as a leader, as he is currently in Daniel LEON's studio in Brussels working on his first album. The musicians involved in the project are guitarists Peter HERTMANS and Jacques PIROTTON, pianist Kris GOESSENS and drummer Bruno CASTELLUCCI. The album should come out on the Igloo label.

    A NEW CD OF THE "SCORA QUARTET" WITH A.O. DIRK SCHREURS
    The Scora Quartet featuring a.o. jazzpianist Dirk SCHREURS, has released "Berlin, Sinfonie der GroBstadt", a new CD containing the original soundtrack for a 1927 German avant-garde movie. The CD was recorded live at the Antwerp Filmmuseum.

    BART DEFOORT : NEW ALBUM PROJECT
    Saxophonist Bart DEFOORT will record a second C.D. under his name (after "MOVING" in '97) with new compositions for the "WERF" label in May 2003 after playing 14 concerts (Jazzlab-series).
    It's a new quartet with Hans VAN OOST (guitar), Bart DE NOLF (bass) and Jan DE HAAS(drums).

    "MUSICIENS DE JAZZ" : A BOOK OF PHOTOS BY CHRISTIAN DEBLANC WITH TEXTS BY BERNARD LEGROS
    The Belgian publisher "Editions Versant Sud" publishes "Musiciens de Jazz", a book of photos of International and Belgian jazzmen by photographer Christian DEBLANC, accompanied by texts written (in French) by freelance jazz journalist Bernard LEGROS and explaining the various currents of contemporary jazz.
    On this occasion, the "Espace Senghor" in Brussels will present an exhibition of the photos by Christian DEBLANC as of November 27 (address : 366, chaussée de Wavre, 1050 Brussels) and a concert will be given on that same day at 19:30 by Garrett LIST (tb) and Kris DEFOORT (p).

    In its series "Jazz in Paris", Universal continues to reissue interesting sessions originally recorded in Paris. They recently released a flute album by the late Bobby JASPAR, titled "Jeux de Quartes" (Emarcy/Universal Jazz 0184232), recorded with Michel HAUSSER or SADI (vibraphone, the latter present on 2 tracks), Paul ROVÈRE or Jimmie MERRITT (double bass) and Kenny CLARKE (drums) and Humberto CANTO (percussion).

    NEW SOLO CD OF MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST DANIEL STOKART : "DANSES SUR UN PIED"
    The MOGNO label has released a solo album of saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel STOKART. Titled "Danses sur un Pied" (Mogno Music J 008), it features Daniel playing a variety of wind instruments, such as saxes, flutes, bass clarinet, ocarina, etc.., which he recorded using the techniques of overdubbing.

    DRUMMER FÉLIX SIMTAINE TOURED EUROPE WITH RHODA SCOTT + HOUSTON PERSON, PEE WEE ELLIS
    Drummer Félix SIMTAINE just did a tour which lasted for one month with organ player Rhoda SCOTT, in France, Germany, Czech Republic, Switserland. He appeared in many festivals, with a band that also included Christian PÖVER (gt) and featured US tenor saxophonists Houston PERSON or Pee Wee ELLIS.

    THE KING BAUDOUIN FOUNDATION HAS ACQUIRED ROBERT PERNET's COLLECTION
    The "King Baudouin Foundation" has acquired the unique jazz collection of the late Robert PERNET. The Belgian jazz historian and archivist, author of reference books on jazz in Belgium, such as "Jazz in Little Belgium" and "Belgian Jazz Discography" (his last work), has left a treasury of more than 7000 records, numerous books, magazines, sheet music, photographs, all objects of great value to document the history of Jazz, particularly in Belgium.
    The Museum of Musical Instruments (MIM) in Brussels will administrate the collection, and after a meticulous inventory, intends to present this rare collection to the public .

    NEW CD OF MYRIAM ALTER's MUSIC ON ENJA WITH AN INTERNATIONAL LINE-UP : "IF"
    The German ENJA label just released a new album of composer and pianist Myriam ALTER. Like her previous one, Alter Ego, she decided to have her compositions played not by herself, but by a band of international format. This time the musicians are Dino SALUZZI (bandoneon), John RUOCCO (clar.), Kenny WERNER (piano), Greg COHEN (bass) and Joey BARON (drums). The album, recorded in New York, is titled "If" (Enja ENJ-9451 2).

    DEC. 13 : BASSIST PHILIPPE AERTS WILL RECEIVE THE BELGIAN DJANGO D'OR FOR 2002 (updated Nov. 28)
    Bassist Philippe AERTS will receive the DJANGO D'OR Award for 2002 (Belgium) during a concert and ceremony wich will take place on December 13, 2002 at Flagey (Place Sainte Croix, Brussels). The price is given by PAB/BAP of SABAM. A "Special Prize fo the jury" will go to Rik BEVERNAGE, of the team of DE WERF, for their contribution to the Belgian jazz scene (tours, concerts, record production).
    Finally a Prize for a new talent will be announced on that night by a jury of professionnals under the presidency of Marc DANVAL. The evening will be dedicated to Toots THIELEMANS who celebrated this year his 80th birthday.

  • GARRETT LIST PERFORMS IN THE PLAY "RWANDA" IN PARIS
    Composer and trombone player Garrett LIST wrote the music for the play "Rwanda", an evocation of the tragic genocide by the GROUPOV theatre company. The play will be presented on November 9, 10 & 11 (16:00) in Paris at the "Grande Halle de la Villette", and the musicians of the Garrett LIST Ensemble will perform the music live on stage.

    PIANIST ERIC LEGNINI APPEARS ON LATEST STEFANO DI BATTISTA CD ON BLUE NOTE
    Blue Note Records announces the release of a new album of Italian saxophonist Stefano DI BATTISTA, titled "Round About Roma" (Blue Note 7243 542406 2 1), arranged by one of the top US arrangers, Vince MENDOZA. Eric LEGNINI plays the piano on the album.

  • Bassist Benoît QUERSIN appears on a reissue of a Zoot SIMS album (1956), "The Brother" (EMI 7243539646 2), part of a new series on EMI, titled "Americans swinging in Paris" (20 albums).

  • NOV. 8 & 9, 2002 : LIVE RECORDING OF A BELGIAN-DUTCH SEXTET AT THE MUSIC VILLAGE
    Under the name "Jazz in Benelux", the Brussels club presents on Nov. 8 & 9, 2002 a band which will be recorded live for the "Jazz Impuls" label. The group is composed of Belgian and Dutch musicians : Bert JORIS (tp), Fay CLAASSEN (voc.), Toon ROOS (sax), Ivan PADUART (p), Stefan LIEVESTRO (b) and Mimi VERDERAME (drs). Two additional tracks should be recorded in a studio with Toots THIELEMANS.

    FINAL BAR : SAXOPHONIST JOHNNY DOVER
    Saxophonist Johnny DOVER (born 1929) died on October 28th around 5pm, after a long illness. He mostly played baritone sax (but also tenor, soprano, clarinets) and arranged a.o. for his "Sax Combination". Johnny DOVER played in several Belgian big bands (a.o. Francis BAY at the BRT) and small groups, ranging from dixieland to mainstream or even fusion (like in Marc MOULIN's PLACEBO, back in the seventies).

    IVAN PADUART : NEW QUARTET ALBUM SOON WITH RICK MARGITZA
    Pianist/composer Ivan PADUART's new quartet album with US saxophonist Rick MARGITZA, "STILL" (One of the album's compositions, written by the saxophonist) will be shortly released on A-Records. The band will be on tour in November 2002. Check the Jazz Lab Series site for dates.

    DE WERF'S FINEST YEAR
    On the occasion of Bruges 2002 cultural capital of Europe, the small team of the De Werf label, located in Bruges, undertook a giant enterprise.

    On October 11 & 12, at the Brussels Music Village, guitarist Jeanfrançois PRINS will meet US alto saxophonist Lee KONITZ, who will celebrate his 75th birthday. The rhythm section will be Sal LAROCCA (bass) and Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs). This is not their first meeting; they have played together on stage and in the recording studios.     CINEY JAZZ NIGHT ENDS WITH EUROPEAN TRUMPET SUMMIT, ACCOMPANIED BY MICHEL HERR, JL RASSINFOSSE & BRUNO CASTELLUCCI
    This year's edition of the "Ciney Jazz Night" took the listeners through emotional musical moments, as the theme of the festival was a tribute to Chet BAKER, a tribute paid a.o. with several musicians who played with him (Philip CATHERINE, Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE, Riccardo DEL FRA, Michel GRAILLIER, Hein VAN DE GEYN, Steve HOUBEN, Michel HERR etc...). The closing day, in a more extraverted note, saw a 2 hour set of the "European Trumpet Summit", the impressive reunion of players like Flavio BOLTRO, Paolo FRESU (I), Eric VLOEIMANS (NL), Stéphane BELMONDO (F) and Gino LATTUCA (B). The rock-solid rhythm section was composed of Michel HERR (p), Jean-Louis RASSINFOSSE (b) and Bruno CASTELLUCCI (drs). These three magic days will definitely stay for a long time in the memory of the listeners.

    "FLAGEY, A NEW ERA", A PIECE BY MICHEL HERR PREMIERED BY THE BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA
    On Sept. 30, on the occasion of a gala evening for the re-opening in Brussels of the renovated "Maison de la Radio Flagey", the BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA played a new piece by Michel HERR, a suite which he called "Flagey, a New Era". On that particular evening, Toots THIELEMANS appeared as a soloist in the last movement and Michel HERR conducted the band in person.
    The piece will be performed again in public by the BJO (this time without Toots) on Oct. 2 (18:15) in the renovated Flagey studios, during the opening festival which will take place during the first week of October (1-6), featuring several styles of music (classical, jazz, world), films etc...
    The BJO will find its regular home at Flagey, as they will be a band in residence in this new cultural spot open to music, sounds and pictures.

  • FINALISTS OF THE "BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITION CONTEST" ARE KNOWN
    The finals of the BJOICC (a collaboration with Jazz Hoeilaart) will be held on Sept. 27 in GC De Bosuil in Hoeilaart, in the context of the annual Young bands contest. The five finalists are: Benjamin VATTER (Switzerland, born 1971), Marcel SAURER (Switzerland, 1969), Carles RIBALTA (Spain, 1970) Klas LINDQUIST (Sweden, 1975) and David RENTER(Canada, 1976). They will conduct their own compositions. An international jury will select the best composition. The winner receives 2000 euros, his composition will be included in the Jazz Hoeilaart compilation CD and will be added to the BJO library. There is also a prize from the orchestra.

    A NEW INSTRUMENT : THE "AULOCHROME", A NEW PIECE : "FANFARE 3" : FRANÇOIS LOUIS, FABRIZIO CASSOL AND PHILIPPE BOESMANS
    François LOUIS, a well known saxophone technician and maker of highly refined mouthpieces, has invented a new instrument, the "aulochrome", using the idea of a double wind intrument with double mouthpiece, allowing the playing of double notes, plus additional harmonics, resulting subtones and other acoustic effects. Contemporary music composer Philippe BOESMANS has written a piece for symphony orchestra and aulochrome in which saxophonist Fabrizio CASSOL will play the solo part on the new instrument. The world premiere of the piece "Fanfare 3" is to take place in Paris, Maison de la Radio on October 26, 2002, with Sylvain CAMBRELING conductiung the Fribourg Symphony. A Belgian performance of the piece will probably happen soon afterwards.

    Saxophonist Kurt VAN HERCK can be heard on a cd, recorded last year, of pianist/composer Amina FIGAROVA, who lives in the Netherlands.     MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST DANIEL STOKART HAS RECORDED A NEW ALBUM FOR MOGNO RECORDS
    Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel STOKART has recorded a new solo album for the MOGNO label, to be released in October 2002. On the album, to be titled "Danse sur un Pied", Daniel plays a variety of wind instruments, such as saxes, flutes, bass clarinet, ocarina, etc.., which he recorded using the techniques of overdubbing.

    THE "MUSIC INN" RECORD SHOP IN BRUSSELS HAS A NEW OWNER
    Since the beginning of August, the well known Brussels record shop "Music Inn" (located chaussée de Waterloo), which had a reputation of offering a quality of service, an excellent knowledge of the jazz and classical catalogs and being a defender of the Belgian releases, has a new owner. Music fans and musicians can only express their gratitude to Anne-Marie and Jean-Pierre PRINS for years of enthusiast involvement. Anne-Marie will apparently now concentrate on her jazz label GAM. Let's hope the new owner will provide a service up to his predecessor's.

    ALTO SAXOPHONIST STÉPHANE MERCIER's COMEBACK TO EUROPE
    Alto saxophonist Stéphane MERCIER, after staying in New York for a few years, announced his comeback to Europe. Among his projects, some work with a Parisian theater company, and playing with musicians from the French scene. Before leaving New York, Mercier has recorded a new album at his own home, with : Nicolas THYS (b), Daniel JODOCY and Ryan SCOTT. Details of release still unknown.

    Saxophonist Willy VANDE WALLE (born 1934) has died yesterday night after a long illness. He will be remembered as a robust illustrator of straight ahead jazz and a generous and extraverted player. He also played the clarinet. A last recording has apparently be made by Willy a few weeks ago.
    Funerals will take place at the Uccle Crematorium on Monday Aug. 19 at 11:45 (rue du Silence, Brussels).

    FRENCH BAND "THÔT" INVITES BELGIAN MUSICIANS FOR CONCERTS AND TO RECORD AN ALBUM
    The French avant-guarde band "Thôt" will perform in and extended line-up of 11 musicians with the addition of some Belgian colleagues : Pierre BERNARD (flute), Laurent BLONDIAU (tp), Antoine PRAWERMAN (bass clar.) and Pierre VAN DORMAEL (gt). They will appear under the name "Thôt agrandi" at the Jazz Festival of Monastier (F) on August 9. The band will be in residence from Sept. 30 through Oct. 10 octobre at the Estaminet (Magny les Hameaux- France) to play a concert (creation on Oct. 5) and record an album for the Yolk label, to be released Spring 2003.

    NEW BEN SLUIJS CD : "FLYING CIRCLES" IS OUT, BUT "THE FINEST IN BELGIAN JAZZ" HITS A SNAG
    The label DE WERF just released the 6th album in their program of 10 cds for the Brugge 2002 cultural capital festivities. It is Ben SLUIJS' "Flying Circles" (Werf 034), featuring the saxophonist's regular quartet with the addition of percussionnist Chris JORIS.
    The next one scheduled is by Philip CATHERINE that was to coincide with his performance, on August 18, during the European Jazz festival organized by the label.
    However, Dreyfus, Philip's label, has imposed a last moment change in their previously given agreement. As a consequence, the album is to come out only during the late fall season (in October or November).

    The Alexi TUOMARILA Quartet has signed a triple record deal with Warner Music.     "MIC MAC" : A NEW CULTURAL TV MAGAZINE ON ARTE & LA 2 USES A MICHEL HERR's THEME
    There is new cultural magazine for a few weeks on ARTE tv, which will now be broadcasted as well on RTBF's La 2 as of June 6, called "MIC MAC". The original music theme has been written by pianist/composer Michel HERR. The program gives the word to artists of all disciplines to present a subject the way they want, in an often humorous, provocative or at least unusual tone. Although the music cannot specifically be described as jazz (it has a humorous Nino Rota flavour wich suits the contents of the magazine), it was recorded with the participation of Belgian jazzmen, a.o. Steve HOUBEN on flutes and Gino LATTUCA on trumpet and fluegelhorn.

    BASSIST DANIEL ROMEO RECORDS FIRST STUDIO ALBUM WITH STAR GUESTS, A.O. MIKE STERN
    Electric bass player Daniel ROMEO has recently spent a whole month in a recording studio to record a new album. The project is definitely ambitious. Daniel worked with his usual team of musicians -who are very efficient funk and soul music performers, such as a.o. Yves BAIBAY (drs), Olivier BODSON (tp), Bert GIELEN (kb, org.), Laurent DOUMONT, Hervé LETOR (sax), Dominique N'TOUMOS (tp), Xavier TRIBOLET (p) etc...- but he also invited several jazz musicians as guests, a.o. : Flavio BOLTRO (tp), Eric LEGNINI (p), Rosario GIULIANI (sax), Gilles NATUREL (b), US guitar star Mike STERN etc...String quartet arrangements were written by Michel HERR.
    According to the participating musicians, be prepared for some surprising and exciting musical moments. Date of release and record label are still unknown.

    NEW CD OF THE TRIO OF ORGAN PLAYER DIRK VAN DER LINDEN : "HAMMOND PRESSURE"

    May 25, 2002 : BRUSSELS "ZINNEKE PARADE" TO INCLUDE ANTOINE PRAWERMAN's MUSIC
    On May 25 (14:00), the "Zinneke Parade", a kind of a street happening in the streets of Brussels, will once again feature contributions of several Brussels artists. One of them will be clarinet player/composer Antoine PRAWERMAN, who wrote "Amalia-Cosmogonie. L'Air", which will be performed by jazzmen such as Erwin VANN (sax), Laurent BLONDIAU (tp), Jeroen VAN HERZEELE (sax), Bo VAN DER WERF (bar. sax), Michel PARÉ (tp), plus dance, singers, the band Sscratch, choreographies by Nina, painter Tania BRUSZ... altogether 200 people. And a concert in the evening at the Brussels Beursschouwburg.

    REISSUE ON CD AND LP : JACQUES PELZER "OPEN SKY UNIT" LIVE ALBUM
    While surfing the net, we ran across by accident on the reissue (apparently from 2001) of the live LP of Belgian fusion band OPEN SKY UNIT. A rare example of saxophonist Jacques PELZER's incursion into fusion jazz, and also one of the first appearances on record of saxophone/flute player Steve HOUBEN. For this live recording recorded in the early seventies, the compositions were written by US pianist and vocalist Ron WILSON. Janot BUCHEM plays electric bass, Micheline PELZER is on drums, and Michel GRAILLIER plays...percussion.
    The album is now available as a LP or a CD via the WHATMUSIC.COM web site. A collector's item. Also check Micheline PELZER's interview on that site.

    FINAL BAR : DRUMMER RUDY FRANKEL
    Belgian jazz drummer Rudy FRANKEL died during the night on Sunday morning April 21, 2002, apparently from a heart failure, while he was driving back from a gig in Holland with trumpet player Herman SANDY.
    Rudy FRANKEL played during decades with generations of Belgian and American jazzmen. He was at ease in various jazz styles.

    STEVE HOUBEN & MICHEL HERR PLAY FOR THE GRAND OPENING OF A NEW WALLOON CULTURAL VENUE IN AVIGNON (F)
    On March 15, 2002, a quartet co-led by saxophonist Steve HOUBEN and pianist/composer Michel HERR played during the grand opening of "Les Doms", a new cultural center financed by the Wallonia/Brussels Community. Under the management of Philippe GROMBEER (previously in charge of "Les Halles de Schaerbeek"), the center intends to present artists of the French speaking part of Belgium from various disciplines ; theater, music, dance, etc...and create links with the cultural actors of the South of France and the Mediterranean area.

    MARCH 31, 2002 : LEW TABACKIN/PHILIPPE AERTS/FÉLIX SIMTAINE : THE REUNION CONCERT!
    A series of concerts that took place at the Brussels Archiduc, that was back in '96, brought together three exceptional musicians.
