L'INOUI JAZZ CLUB (REDANGE, LUXEMBURG) : 1st HAND IMPRESSIONS
We have recently published the whereabouts of a new jazzclub at Redange (Luxembourg) just across the border from Arlon.
A visit there, on the occasion of the passage of the Vienna Art Orchestra, reveals a splendid establishment (opened only last April) nicely decorated, warm atmosphere and very welcoming owners (Paul & Shlomit). Good food and drinks at half price of Brussels clubs. More and more Belgian jazzmen will be performing there (Jacques STOTZEM in December, Phil ABRAHAM in January...). Jazz concerts are held on Fridays, sometimes also Saturday.
The only drawback is the distance (200 Kms from Brussels area) but events such as this weekend make it worthwhile.

JAZZ IN BELGIUM : 4th ANNIVERSARY
The web site Jazz in Belgium that you are currently visiting, and whose aim is the promotion of the Belgian jazz musicians and the Belgian jazz scene in general, is now four years old. We decided to go on-line on October 26, '96.
Since October '96, the site has received more than 45.000 visitors, 17.000 during the last 12 months. This figure is only a partial indication of the traffic, as it only represents the hits on the home page alone.
Here are a few more figures : we had to create (and daily update) more than 1.200 files, a number that is growing every day. The site offers more than 200 resumes of Belgian jazz musicians, more than 100 band pages, more than one hundred recent Belgian jazz CD pages, and tons of miscellaneous informations on the Belgian jazz scene.
We hope you'll keep paying us frequent visits, we 're adding stuff every day. Your comments, suggestions and encouragements are always welcome. Thanks for your support.

On September 28, 2000, the second edition of the Night of the Internet took place at the Brussels Hilton.
Organized and sponsored by the top names of the IT industry it rewarded web enterprising of all categories in Belgium.
This web site was voted top of the year 2000 (in its category). While the recognition went to individuals, in this case the webmaster, it is the site that actually determined the jury's choice.
The reasoning is as follows :
"Jazzinbelgium.org is the web site of "Les Lundis d'Hortense", the association of jazz musicians in Belgium. This combination of e-publishing, of a heritage that makes Belgians proud and of culture is a great success. It is due to such kind of initiatives of 'contents' that the Web attracts more and more surfers."

They all played together as a tribute to their old colleague and friend : Nic FISSETTE, Richard ROUSSELET, Bert JORIS, Serge PLUME, Michel PARÉ, Laurent BLONDIAU, Nico SCHEPERS, Gino LATTUCA, etc...!

NEW POSH JAZZ CLUB IN BRUSSELS : THE MUSIC VILLAGE
Saturday night, August 26, the Music Village (rue des Pierres 50, 1000 Brussels) opened its doors to inaugurate its existence with a concert by Roger VAN HA's New look Trio (that indeed always looks new with ever changing musicians).
At a moment when almost all hope is lost for Travers (you can find an online petition at Lenord rubrique news / infos), it is heartening news to know that a new club was opened.
The official, public, inauguration is on September 1st.
For the programming see our WHAT'S UP page or the club's own web site (accessible from What's up).The owner has entrusted Ivan PADUART to be in charge of the artistic programming. Indeed the concerts schedule will make you drool.
Located a few steps from the Brussels Gd. Place (just under the hotel Amigo) and owned by a certain Paul, it evokes far away souvenirs and hope to see the old good days of Pol's (Leenders), who just left us a forthnight ago, coming back.
The owner has taken over a Chinese shop, kept the characteristics (like the dark red lacquer paint) and managed to create the right atmosphere. It is certainly a nice club of a higher category of your usual jazz club.Access is only for members (anybody can become one for a yearly fee of 350 Bef.) and entry fee that will vary according to group size and standing. The drinks a somewhat on the expensive side (90 Bef for soft drinks and beer) but as mentioned, it is a higher standing establishment.
Concert every night from Wednesday through Saturday.

    TEARS FOR ANNICK NOZATI
    Fred VAN HOVE writes :
    Dear Friends,
Though many of you might not have heard her live, I thought it is my duty to inform you that singer Annick NOZATI has been found dead in her apartment in Paris.
Since 1984 we worked together as a duo, from 1988 on as a trio with Johannes BAUER. She was also participating in 't Nonet since its beginning in 1991.
I think she is one of the most underestimated improvisers on the global scene. There were times when we didn't see each other for months, but whenever we came together, musically it clicked immediately.
An became really a friend of Mie & myself, part of the family so to speak.
Life & Music must go on. But a part of mine isn't there anymore.
    Annick is irreplaceable.
    Aren't we all?(July 10, 2000)

TRAVERS : DISSOLUTION UNLESS .../ AND ON TOP OF IT, "DIMANCHES DU BOIS DE LA CAMBRE" JEOPARDIZED

Hereunder is his News Letter April 2000 :
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear Jazz Aficinadoes,
Please find one of my occasional news letters.

Made a few out of town trips recently. Spent a couple of days in Zurich and was happy to find the 'Casa Bar' still thriving. A band from the UK were doing a three week residence and both they and the packed house were enjoying themselves.
Also had a few days in London, a friend of mine, bass player Ben Crosland, was doing a lunch time gig at the Royal Festival Hall, a very well attended event, that featured his original compositions.

I continue to receive and continue to appreciate the never ending stream of email giving me information about new jazz clubs, updates about existing listings, and other jazz scene information. I have long lost count of just how many clubs there are listed but it must now be well over three thousand. More exotic locations are always fun to hear about, check out some very recent additions: Guam, Bali, Cuba.
    FESTIVAL ORGANISERS

Will be happy to add your event to this very high profile section of the web site.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY IN CHINA FOR RECORD PRODUCERS (?)
The following is circulated by Wallonie Bruxelles Musiques with the advise to take it with a grain of salt....
The message was received on January 19th:

    Dear Sir,
We are a distribution company in China under the Ministry of Broadcast. We are very interested to import or license your products into China. We have never thought of doing this until recently because of the lack of promotional channels to promote western music in China. We will be establishing a music web site similar to CD-NOW. By doing this, we can now promote as many western titles as we want. Censorship and quotas are very difficult to come by in China but because we a subsidiary of the Ministry of Broadcast, we have certain advantages that other distribution companies do not have. We will be vigorously promoting music from all over the world. I hope this will give the music lovers in China more opportunities to take in more music and we can do more business.
Because of the Internet revolution and our strength in physical distribution in China, this is an opportunity that you should not miss if you want to get a foothold in world's biggest market.
The market in China is very cheap therefore the import price should be from 2 - 5 USD. Please send us your catalogue and samplers.

    GETTIN' EXPERIMENTAL
      From your webmaster:
In the past fortnight, since we relocated to the new server, we have been messing around with the home page, namely by embedding JAVA applets (to display last modified date, to have background music and other gimmicks for the sake of sophistication).
Experience shows that JAVA is unstable, and trouble prone, to mess with, that depending on the browser type (MSIE or Netscape) and version the results differ from one machine/platform to another and often caused errors which blew users out of the water, so to speak.
We now simplified so that the page loads faster and shouldn't cause troubles. Sorry if we irritated anybody. As you could notice, we still experience some problems with update dates in our pages. We are working at a solution. Thank you for your understanding.
