JEAN WARLAND INTRODUCES 12 BASSES PROJECT !
Bassist and arranger Jean Warland has been commissioned by Jazz Middelheim to write for a 12 piece band composed of double basses. His arrangements on jazz classics were performed in Antwerp (in de Singel) by an international gathering of bass players, some from the classical world (arco), some from the jazz scene (pizzicato, a.o. Jean himself, Bas Cooymans, Bart de Nolf). Jan De Haas (drs) provided with some discrete brush work and the audience was amazed at the full range of sounds produced by the acoustic instruments. Peter Vermeersch also brought in a piece he composed for the basses in a more experimental idiom.

AUG. 12, 2005 : FINAL BAR : FRANCY BOLAND, PIANIST/COMPOSER/ARRANGER OF WORLD FAME
We hear from SADI, his good friend, that pianist/composer/arranger Francy BOLAND has died this afternoon (12:30) in Geneva, Switserland, of cancer, at the age of 75.
He was an immense musician, without any doubt one the greatest jazzmen ever born in Europe (he was born in Namur, Belgium, on November 6, 1929). After playing and writing for Bobby JASPAR, SADI, Henri RENAUD, etc...he led an octet with US drummer Kenny CLARKE (which recorded for Blue Note), and his writing talents were soon praised internationally. He had the opportunity to write for all the major radio big bands in Europe, the Count BASIE Orchestra, and ended up in the sixties and seventies leading a fantastic super big band, the Kenny CLARKE/Francy BOLAND, which made an impressive contribution to the jazz scene, recording numerous albums and appearing all over the world. These last years, he lived in semi-retirement in Switserland.
Thank you, Mr Boland, we owe you some great music...
