THE MARKS BROTHERS
(Mark Dresser / Mark Helias)(W.E.R.F. 022)
The bass belongs to the central instruments in jazz-music, But for a long time its only use in the classic jazz-formation was the time-keeping in the background- Since several years now the bass got more and more presented as a unique flexible and interesting instrument, and it showed its wide range of stylistic and technical possibilities.
Mark Dresser and Mark Helias, who meet now in a remarkable duo, belong to the leading bass-players of the younger jazz-scene of New York. They developped the stylistic range of the bass throughout the last years, enriched the role of the instrument and showed a new self-confidence, which opened new possibilities to the bass, Dresser says today : "I hear many voices in my head, flute, cello, even trains, And I may play them all on my bass,"

This unique duo presents the individual abilities of the two bass-players with their differences in handling the bass on one side. The duo also demonstrates the musical power of this bulky Instrument on the other side. The name of the duo flnally stands for the Intense friendship of both musicians.

Tuba trunks being played full blast, bursts of sonorous modesty, squawking - wooded poetry - rustling skins, reverbating cords, imaginary dances, pulsation, blow, rubbing, blow, breathe, blow, pauze. ..." With a.o. Michel DEBRULLE (drums), Stephan POUGIN (perc.), Michel MASSOT (tuba), Laurent BLONDIAU (tp) etc...
Christoph ERBSTÖSSER TRIO : "VIVE LES ETRANGERS" (W.E.R.F. 027) (October 2001) "Christoph Erbstösser focuses mainly on the African roots of jazz: rhythm, the spirituality of the blues: what John Coltrane and the West-African singers from the minstrel tradition have in common : a certain looseness, choosing notes to underpin a story as opposed to a system. The starting point behind the music on this CD is the spirit of storytellers across the world. It amply proves that artistic value and accessibility can go hand in hand, that jazz does not have to be hermetic at all. Jos MACHTEL and Dré PALLEMAERTS are Erbstösser's two highly musical and professionally gifted compagnons de route."
